Of course they should. Why should we change to suit their needs?

AHHHH!! this drives me crazy that it even has to be asked. If you move to France what language will you have to learn to have a life there?? If I decided I wanted to move to Spain or Mexico I would first learn Spanish, why is this such a double standard? Any Spanish speaking person can come here and have absolutely no problem, we make it so easy! EVERYTHING is in Spanish and English now, it is ridiculous. If you want to live in a country, speak the language. And if you can't speak it, then stay where you are. And if you can't come here legally, then stay where you are until you can. I don't understand how people can just mosey on over the border, get a job, have a family, all on our tax dollars, and not even have to learn the language!!

People should definately have to know the English language. As said before, our country was founded by Europeans who spoke English. Of course, the English language spoken these days isn't "proper" but I shouldn't have to know anymore Spanish than it takes to order off of a Taco Bell menu. If I went to Germany, I would speak German; if I went to France, I would speak French...why? Because other countries don't tolerate the s*** that they US does. Our ancestors were proud to become American's, LEGALLY! Now days people just expect that right to be given to them!

YES! People who live in the United States should speak English. For several hundred years, we have spoken English. Why are we going to let illegal immigrants change our way of speaking. Just because they're too lazy to learn English doesn't mean that we should have to learn Spanish to suit them. If they want to live in the U.S., they need to be and act like a U.S. citizen.

I think that when people come to live in our country, they should be required to learn English. At least a basic vocabulary. However I think that they should still be allowed to speak their native language.

Back in the first part of the century when most of our ancestors came to this country through Ellis Island, they had some knowledge of the English language. But they also were determined to learn the rest of it. They took pride in becoming American and wanted to learn the American language (English).

I think that if you want to live the American dream, you should be able to speak about it in the language that Americans speak.

Furthermore, when you visit another country you are expected to be able to speak the language of the country in which you are visiting.

I wouldn't expect everyone that comes here to know English. Some come under dire straits (for example, Cubans seeking asylum), and don't have time to learn the language. Some come from countries where English education is non-existant, like in central Africa. Most Asian immigrants know little or no English when they come because Asian languages are so different in grammar and style (not to mention the use of characters instead of romanized letters). And since large enough populations of almost any nationality can be found in areas of our country (Southern California alone is home to large groups of Armenians, Cambodians, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Laotian, Thai, and Vietnamese), an immigrant can literally live in the US without ever having to know English.

That said, the immigrants have no right to DEMAND that things be done in their language. If they want to communicate with someone of a different race who speaks a different foreign language (say a Mexican trying to speak to a Japanese), then the common denominator would be for both to use English. If they want to receive an education, there's only so much bilingual education that can go around. If they want to ever get out of their ethnic communities, they will need to learn English. But at the same time, I would never discourage people from keeping their native tongues and using them at home or amongst themselves.

English is an awfully limited language, fit for barbarians who love war and murder. A decent language should have more adjectives describing beauty than verbs exalting destruction.

I can speak several languages, and I must say English is the one I like the least. Hopefully, changing this barbaric tongue for a more civilized form of speech would change the character of this nation, turning it from a cesspool of hatred and racism, bent on invading innocent countries, into a beacon of light.

I think it should be. Think about it If I moved to Mexico I would have to learn Spanish right? if I move to France I have to learn French right? I think the US f----ed up when they didn't enforce English as the number one Language the reason why they didn't is because corporate America runs America and they like to use illegals because they can pay them less which means corporate America gets even more money they don't have to give an employee medical or dental etc. But they know if they do enforce English first in America that will force them to hire Americans and they know americans are going to form unions which mean they will have to include medical and dental and paid vacation and they don't want that. America is dying thanks to the government and corporate america then again corporate america is no doubt running this country.

I think people should speak both English and their native language whatever it is. English because it would be very helpful to go by living in the States and your native language because its part of who you are!

When you come to America you're expected to respect the law of the land and policy of this nation. RESPECT those who have been living here for centuries and speak english, learn American history, and respect the cultures and traditions of being an American.

Sure, they can speak their own language behind closed doors. But if someone intends to sell me something, speak to me, etc. they should DO IT IN ENGLISH.

This nation wasn't built by Mexicans, Asians, etc. It was built by WHITE EUROPEANS WHO SPOKE ENGLISH. SHOW SOME RESPECT!

AND BY THE WAY, when our forefathers *who founded this nation* came here from other countries, they stood in line for hours, learned English and American history.. What the hell makes you people think those who want to come here now 'days are any different? They shouldn't be able to slack off and refrain from learning what it means to be an American. We're not going to lower our standards to fit your needs, or anyone elses forthat matter. If you want to go to a third-world country that will let you speak your own language and continue to rip apart civilizations --- go to another country.

Unless you want to turn this world into another third world, I suggest you learn English or get out - 'cause I'm sure there are other countries in which you can reside in.

Keep disrespecting this country, forcing it into multi-cultures, bi-lingual, etc.. And you can KISS THE AMERICAN DREAM GOODDDDDDDBYE.
