Could the point in believing in God be to fully awaken some essential quality buried within us?

Is a deity an archetype for our own deepest nature?

By regularly reflecting on this perfection can we eventually clear our mind to the point of becoming this perfection?

By thinking of perfection it most likely won't make us perfect, but meditation and prayer can have visible benifits on your life by activating a wide variety of "good feeling" parts of your brain and reflecting on good thoughts will make you less stressed and a better person to be around, but actually achieving perfection? what is perfect to you and what is perfect to me should be in the philosophy section, as it is undefinable.

oh, your question actually has nothing to do with athiests and theists, a buddhist can be buddhist and believe in no gods, or believe in all gods, someone can believe in god and meditate insead of pray, don't try to clash athiesm and theism together, it can be disturbing to some people.

The point in believing in God is to allay the human fear of innevitable death. After that, God and Religion are used by those in power to manipulate the followers and unknowing masses by use of this fear.

Furthermore, those with the purported deepest belief in God seem to be the furthest from reaching this "perfection", or any perfection for that matter.

Well, that's assuming there's a pont to it. But I would agree that that is one potential use for it.

And personally, I think our deepest nature is completely independent of any diety. If there is a god, I think we are about as similar to him as a damsel fly.

What perfection?
