My dog athena is a pit bull, approximately 2 years old. She was spayed one week ago, and she hasn't eaten. She is keeping fluids down, but we give her small amounts. Why hasn't she eaten?? We are taking her to the vet tomorrow, but I am so worried... any suggestions on getting her to eat? She wouldn't even eat a pork chop.....

Some animals feel like they have existing pressure on their bellies after being spayed. If your vet starts throwing ideas at you on what to do for her ask them about nutracal. It is what we give to under weight malnourished greyhounds from the race track when we rescue them. It is full of vitamins, nutrients and the callories that add healthy weight

As long as she doesn't have a fever and she's keeping down fluids, she'll be OK. I had a dog that had cancer surgery and wouldn't eat for five days. As soon as he got hungry enough, he started eating. I also had a dog who we adopted from a shelter and he was so malnourished and ill we couldn't get him to eat. We fed him baby food, with no onions in it (please check the labels) and boiled chicken with rice. I would try the boiled chicken and rice if you're going to try anything, but make sure only to give her a little at a time even if she wants more. If she eats too much after a week of not eating, she'll get a bellyache and will vomit. Then you'll be back to square one. I know you're worried, but I'm sure she's going to be fine.

It's probably just the effects of the anesthesia. The vet usually tells me not to feed more than half the normal amount of food the day they come home .
