In both eras, a girl was supposed to offer herself to her husband on their wedding night. In some cultures, especially in the villages, the villagers would gather outside the newlywed's bedroom window waiting for "proof" of the bride's virginity and the grooms ability, by waving the soiled sheets outside the window.

Mind you, many of them were not virgins in the sense that they were enjoying various forms of sex without actually deflowering themselves. In some cases, women who had actually lost their virginity, had doctors sew their hymen so that their future husband wouldn't know the difference. Thank God times have changed!
