Do you mean the top part of your head or the part of the hair closest to the scalp? The BEST way is to see a hairdresser so they can professionally section it off with foil and color only the part you want. If you mean just the top part of your head, just block off the bottom part by tying/clipping it up and covering with plastic, then dye the rest. If you mean just the part of the hair from the scalp about halfway down the strand, then that's harder. A hairdresser would use special foil under a section of the hair, apply the color to that portion of the hair only and then do another section. This process is started from the neck area up.

I'm not sure exactly what you are wanting to do-but please Don't put petroleum jelly or Vaseline in your hair-it takes FOREVER to come out-u can use cholesterol to cover the parts you don't want to color but it may not protect it all-are u wanting the top half as in maybe the section above your ears one color and then the rest another color? If so it is a matter of sectioning-coloring the one section-washing and rinsing-sectioning that off w/ the choloesterol and clips and coloring what is left-If you could specify I can try to help :O)

When you apply the color, do not apply it to the bottom half of you hair. Rinsing may be tricky, so maybe cover the bottom half in plastic wrap or something. Or, apply permanent color all over and wait a few months for it to grow out.

If you don't want to see a pro, try buying a few of those root touch up hair colors that are made for the just for the roots. That may work.

mix the solutions together then apply to hair, with hair parted in the middle, just add some on either side of the part., work in a little with fingers, do some on other side, work in.....then do this until you reach the length you want...let sit on hair for 20 minutes, get in shower and rinse hair color out like rinsing hair regularly.....They also give you a tube of color conditioner, use just a little in your palm, rub hands together and apply to wet hair. rinse again...........pat dry, then use hair dryer lightly.
It should look good, apply down to below your ears for a better look......good luck...If under age, please get moms approval so there are no arguments....she knows what is best for you.
If you are very young, it is not good for young hair....

You wrap the bottom half in tin-foil or plastic wrap and just dye the top part.

spread petrolium jelly on the parts you dont want dyed. trust me this works perfect it is what i used to do for bleaching and dying. the dye or bleach cant stick to the pertolium jelly so it doesnt dye the hair.

WHY would you do this? Is this some new trend? Or are you trying really hard to be "different"? Don't do it. Put chunky highlights in before you do this.
