Focus hard on perfecting your core lifts (bench, squats, deadlifts), only doing other lifts as secondary exercises. Do primarily compound exercises (lifts that incorporate multiple muscle groups). Don't lift more than an hour a day.

Get LOTS of protein, lots and lots. More than you think you might need. Get good carbs and fats as well. Good nutrition taken in 5-6 meals a day.

Work out smart, don't work out every day, give your muscles time to recover, and get lots of rest. Go high intensity as you get more advanced, but be careful about overtraining. If you can, get a personal trainer, or at least find a workout buddy that'll kick your butt and help get you psychologically pumped.

Good luck!
