First of all, congratulations! The best advice I can offer is to always make sure that the child knows your there for them if they need someone other than their parents to talk to. Always remember their birthdays/special events by sending a card or little gift and always give them hugs and kisses so they grow up knowing you love them.

Yes, the job of an aunt or uncle is to have a brag book of the child. They must also be sure to brag about the child to the parents. This encourages the parents to keep being great parents.
Buying presents for baby's birthdays are VERY important, and weekend baby sitting for free about once every 2 months shows you care.

Spend as much time as you can helping the new mommy/daddy in ways that maybe other people haven't offered: laundry, picking up groceries from a favorite health food store, etc. Go on some of the new baby sites and see what the trends are, if you don't know -- if they are practicing "attachment parenting" for example, read about it....be educated
Love that little tyke. Truly be on deck for babysitting when the time comes for Mom & Dad to step out again.
God bless!

Be attentive and caring for your new niece/nephew. My aunts and uncles played a pivotal role in my life. They helped care for me just like my own parents did. They always wanted the best for me, and lead me in the right direction in life. Kind of like extended parents.

Spoil that baby silly! That is your MOST important job as aunt and uncle. You should also offer to babysit for free when you can. That gives you time to spoil the child and the parents time to themselves knowing the baby is in good hands.

Congratulations! Try not to drop the baby! Help out the mother when you can while the child is young. When it is a little older, offer to sit for the parents, have fun with the child. You don't have to enforce all the rules of a parent but take care to respect their wishes. I think it is so important for kids to have people outside of their parents that they can trust with their whole hearts so you have a big responsibility.

spoil your niece/nephew, especially if u only see them a few times a year. do this before you end up with like 15 of them, because then u wont be able to spoil them all. my aunts are like second mothers to me and sometimes when i cant talk to my mom about something i know i can always talk to them more openly so thats always cool.
