Because water goes stale too. If it sits for a long time in a bottle it will be stagnant. Wouldn't you want to drink fresh clean water? It's the same as any other drink really, you should drink it soon after opening it.

Because the whole industry of bottling water for sale is flawed. The FDA attempts to standardize and regulate it. Many people believe that just because it comes in a bottle, it is pure and bacteria free. Not true.

it will get a distilled taste after awhile and be nasty tasting-thats really all its about i mean when we had a drought back in kansas and the pipes broke we drank bottled water that ws like expired about 6 months ago (at that time) its been at least 7 years from then and were just fine

Two reasons, bacteria might be present and the the soft plastic material eventually leaches into the water causing death. Just kidding, it only leaches a estrogen like chemical that is well known as a "saltpeater" like chemical.

Clear plastic bottles are made from low density polyethylenes (LDPEs) and UV rays, such as sunlight, cause these to break down.

I think it has to do with a couple of things - required to have a date and the "breakdown" of the material it is contained in.

it has one beccuase bactiria gets into it and it can make you sick haha .
and it starts to taste yukky .
