Ill be honest, i worked in a pet store for 3 years and neither is good for a child. They are known to be high strung and can have behavior issues and are known to bite. A great dog is a lab or a golden retriever. THey are great dogs and can learn easily, friendly and are a best friend you will have for a long time!

It's never a good dog to start off with 2. Starting with one you'll be able to begin a healthy relationship with the dog. Also trying to train two dogs at the same time can be frustrating. Both of these dogs are absolutely wonderful (despite popular belief about aggressive pits) One dog will be just fine at home alone, dogs are not human, they do not have the same feelings. If you plan on having both breeds in the future, I would suggest the Doberman first as somtimes adult (and sometimes young) pittbulls DO have issues with other dogs. Make sure though that the doberman has been socialized and trained properly before introducing another dog to the family. Goodluck!
EDIT:
in response to an earlier post, Pittbulls and Dobermans are fantastic dogs if raise propperly. The dangerous pitts you see on television are dangerous because they were made to be. They dont tell you this, but Laboradors and Goldens can and often are just as or more dangerous than bully breeds. (I love them all the same however... i have a black lab myself) And for the reccord, Cocker spaniels are at the top of the bite list.
EDIT: For training I do NOT reccomend anything like Petsmart or PetCo. As most "trainers" there are not certified dog trainers. Look online for a local gental trainer. Stay away from fear training and anything involving physical things like choke colars and such.

A doberman is the better pick for make a excellent family dog and also will guard but either dog should have obdience training by a reputable trainer-no rough stuff domination training-and need to be socialized to other dogs why a group training class like at Petsmart is esp valuable to assure will be a good family dog that can be trusted. If you get the doberman from a shelter as the Humane Society or any shelter they recommend the shelter guarantees the animal is in best of health, has had personality tests to assure not aggressive and since usually rescued from terrible life will be loving and appreciative of having a home. Had a doberman and simply loved her for very loyal and would protect me even in the car until given signal by me that its ok by strangers approaching. Also love to play(as do all dogs) also i s a working dog so be sure that it gets exercise. Pits if raised right can be a good pet but genetically The Doberman is safer. for one nevear knows when the gene stuff will emerge in the dog.Getting a shelter dog not only do you get the companionship, loyalty and love but you'll be doing a wonderful thing that even God recognizes for its value.

I agree with Kris. As far as the one or two dogs question, it really depends on your personal situation. Money will be a factor, especially with two larger dogs. You have to have plenty of room for two dogs. I would recommend getting a different breed and just one if money would be a problem. If you aren't home much, crate training works well, and can speed up housebreaking. You can put plenty of toys in the crate with food and water so that they will be content until you get home!

No dont get 2 dogs untill youve raised the first one,2 dogs together is hard work you have double the training socilising etc.A dog can live a happy life by them selves they dont have to have another doggie companion and if your work at all day with no one coming in and checking on the dog while your at work then you shouldn't be getting a dog atall. It doesn't really matter what breed you get as long as you train and socilise it well.Good luck.

Depending on what you want the dog to do, again if you tell a little more information about what you want in a dog then maybe we can answer a little better. Instead of saying this dog or this dog, say what you want: large breed, shedding doesn't matter, must be active, etc.

you should look up and compare the breeds and see if one more closely matches what you are looking for. both breeds are wonderful dogs with proper training. are you prepared to put in the time and effort to handle an aggressive breed dog.
