I think that modern reactors are very safe and that, over time, the nation should rely more on nuclear energy.

Years ago, I lived in Sacramento CA for a while. Their local newspaper had an article about the nuclear plant close to there.
The article basically stated that if the world used nuclear power for it's energy - then our monthly electric bill would be less than $10. The problem with that is; disposing of the waste and no one could get rich from it. If someone could solve the waste disposal issue then nuclear power would be the most cost effective for everyone. Our society is so bent on making money from everything. The same goes for fuel for our vehicles. I'm sure someone has already invented a fuel source that costs next to nothing but the big auto makers will not allow this to happen becuase they can't make the 'big bucks' on it.

The key to the nuclear power issue is the possibility of a major catastrophe in the event of an accident/failure--as happened at Chernoble.

But--it's likely tha tgiven modern technology, engineers can designe safe systems--the overall record of the hundreds of plants already exising is excellant.

But--I would not favor resuming the building of nuclear plants at this time--but not for technical reasons. For this to be done right requires top engineering--and regulation and oversight based on a high level of competance. Currently, the government cannot be trusted with that responsibility. Imagine if a political pal like Mike Brown (ex-FEMA cheif of Katrina infamy) were in charge! Just the thought is enough to make you glow in the dark!

Old technology not so good (Chernobyl, Three Mile Island) but new systems make it a VERY good alternative. The use of Helium as a heat transfer agent instead of water cuts contaminated waste disposal by 90%. Funny you don't hear about that in this country. General Atomics in San Diego pioneered the concept, several plants now in operation world wide...very successful. Liberals are still stonewalling for some very ignorant reasons... and now they are in charge... wheee.

actually nuclear energy has great potential. it also has great potential for catastrophe. which has scared most scientist into steering clear of it. if they could figure out how to make it helpful without being so dangerous the worlds energy demands would be easily met. think about this . a car powered by a nuclear reactor would run without ever needing refueled. my opinion they gave up on it way too soon.

I actually think it's a good thing if done properly. It's safe for the environment and produces little waste. The only problem is things like Chernobyl or Three Mile Island happening!
