Theres no room in my mouth for my wisdom teeth to grow in, so I am getting them cut out in a couple weeks. The dentist is giving me ativan before the procedure..Has anyone ever taken ativan before a dental procedure such as this..and does it help? I'm really scared it's going to hurt...so any wisdom teeth extraction stories would be helpful. Thanks :)

You are having your wisdom teeth out for the same reason I did. I didn't have room in my mouth for my 4 wisdom teeth. Sometimes they put people to sleep to remove them. I wanted to be awake. The only trauma when I had mine removed was that a nurse had to hold my head down while the dr yanked. I felt a little lightheaded when I got to the car--I think it was just my nerves. I started gagging for a few minutes when my husband told me that a little blood was coming down the side of my mouth when we were in the car. I got a little lightheaded when I walked into the house. Once I relaxed, I was fine and I went to church that evening. When people are having wisdom teeth out when they are impacted--that is when I guess it is really painful. Good Luck.

I'm sure it will help (though I have not taken ativan). I had three wisdom teeth pulled and was so paranoid that it would be TERRIBLE. I was only given Tylenol 3 afterwards and it was just fine. It was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Not much pain, just holding the gauze in was annoying. I didn't want to have to wait for a dentist to sedate me (it would have taken like three months) so I had all three pulled by my regular dentist just like that. So feel lucky you get to be totally out of it for the experience! I know for some people it is very painful, but I'm sure that is more rare than you might think (I read all kind of horror stories on the net before I got mine pulled...so I thought that was the norm. But of course, those are the exception). But since you are doing all four at once the extra pain precautions are necessary. The dentists know what they are doing. Just have plenty of soup and milkshakes on hand, take it easy, and you'll be fine. Of course, if you are scared....tell your dentist you only want two done at a time. They can do the other two a month later, unless things are getting crowded quickly.

Not sure what Ativan is, but I had 4 wisdom teeth out too... years ago. The procedure was easy... I was under general anesthesia so didn't feel a thing. I awoke when it was done and was driven home. Pain medication afterwards did the trick... I only recall needing to be careful of what I ate for a week or so, but no other real discomfort. Try to focus on how good this will be for you... and trust your doctors! It is amazing how your attitude can effect your outcome. You will look back on it in a few years and wonder what the big deal was. Hard to say, but the cliche holds... trust me.

I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out as well. They made me watch a video about the procedure and I was put to sleep. My mouth was swollen very bad for a few days but it eventually went down in about a weeks time. After the first two days, it didn't hurt as much. Make plans to stay inside for at least three days after your procedure. Good luck and I hope I helped.

I had all 4 of mine cut out 8 years ago. One tooth was pushing through but was growing in sideways and my gum got infected. The other 3 were impacted. I was under general anesthesia during the procedure and was given vicodin afterwards. It wasn't too bad. I was eating solid foods again after a week and I had very little facial swelling and no bruising.

i used to work in a dental office, and one time (in a case like yours) a patient was directed to take ativan thritry minutes prior to the appointment. when he arrived, he was quickly seated, and asked if he had taken his medication as asked to to. he said yes, so i went on to the next room. just a couple seconds later, he had raised his chair all the way to the highest level, and was stanging on it looking over the wall. he said he felt "high" and started laughing. i dont think he was suppose to feel high, it was just suppose to relax him to help the sedation go quicker. he was acting like he was on something other than ativan. but, take care, hope it goes smoothly for you!

I was put to sleep so it didn't hurt, but they send you home with gauze and it bleeds forever and hurts. You can't eat solid foods for a while, but they should give you medicine to take home after.
