I found that by asking people you know (work, church, school, etc) you can usually find someone who bakes cakes as a hobby or home business. Most of these people do it for a lot less than even a grocery store bakery. Some will only charge you ingredients.
Just to give you an idea of the cost difference you might expect, I found a lady who would do my cake for $1.10/slice. For 250 slices, which is what I'll need, the cake would be $275. If I went to an actual baker, the cost would go up to $3.25 per slice, which is $812.50. Big difference!
Ask around - you'd be surprised how many people know someone who knows someone who makes cakes (the same goes for photographers, musicians, florists, etc.)
Good luck, and happy planning!

Prices vary by size, ingredients decorations, particulars and the bakery. I had a beautiful 3 tiered vanilla pound cake made at a local bakery and it cost $125.00, it was a beautiful cake and I was very pleased how the decorator blended colors that matched the entire wedding party. There are also home bakers that make wedding cakes, check around...

I am planning a wedding...I live in WI so it may vary by location. We are looking at $2.25 per slice to $2.75 per slice. So multiply that by how many people you are inviting. Most bakeries will include the anniversary cake if you are purchasing a cake for over 100 people. Hope this helps.

They do vary by size, detail, and decorations. However, a cost cutting idea would be to pass word along your connections to find a friend of a friend (or something of that sort) to bake the cake for you. That's what I did, and my mother has a friend at work who is amazing at baking cakes, including the tiered ones, and will charge me pennies compared to the bakeries and catering companies. Congrats on the wedding, hope you have the one of your dreams!!

It is really going to vary by location and quality. I work for a caterer and our prices start at $4.25/slice for buttercream and $5.25/slice for fondant. Then the price will change depending on what you put on the inside as a filling. You're looking at $500, at least, for 100 people.
Save money by buying a smaller cake to cut and fedding everyone else with a sheet cake. No one is going to be able to tell the difference because it is pre-sliced anyways.

My mother got my grandparent's 50th wedding anniversary cake (3 tiers and full decorations) for 75 dollars. She went to the local Meridian Technology Center where one of the classes they teach is Culinary Arts. She got a cheap cake that looked gorgeous and tasted great. Try to find a local Culinary Arts School in your area and see how much they charge!

Both of my daughters have been married in the last three months. We chose the cake lady who does it out of her home instead of those that have a large business. We were allowed to taste the cake and they were fabulous. Those women also charged 1.00-1.25 per slice vs. 3-4 dollars per slice. Mints were 15.00 per 100 mints. Set up and delivery was quite a bit cheaper also. We asked others who they had used and their recommendations made us contact the women we used. One of my cakes was 305.00 everything included, the other 342.00. Very reasonable comparitively speaking. Bridal fairs are a good place to check wedding cakes out.

yea they will most definetly vary, and it will also depend on the amount of detail you want, in mississippi, my cake is costin $2 per slice times 144 plus a delivery charge that puts it a little over 300, and its supposed to be pretty tedious and she can't do a lot of the stuff till she gets to there cuz its alot of black on white so it will bleed, anyway, maybe your southern so that will help, otherwise, its prolly gonna cost a lot more!

it will vary by location and the size. You can get them very small for around $200 and huge for much much more. I would check with a local bakery or grocery store.

Depends on what part of the world you are in and on how big you want. If you go to a gourmet shop then you will spend more that if you go to the local family run bakery. Decide on a price and find someone willing to do what you want for that amount.
