No problem DC girl, Here's how it's done
When you get out of the airport terminal look up and you will see what looks like a mono-rail That's the Air- Train
Take the Air - Train to the end
The Jamaica Station of the Long Island Rail Road
Pay the $ 5.00 to get off the Air Train and go downstairs to the ticket booth and get a round trip PEAK ticket to Woodside , a return ticket for the Air train and a Metro-card good for at least two subway rides
Take the LOCAL!!!!! train to Woodside
I made the distinction for a reason ; At that hour of the day Jamaica station is going to be zoo .
there are going to be trains coming and going on a lot of different tracks and people changing trains to different destinations.
So what you want to hear is " This is the local train to New York stopping at Kew Gardens , Forest Hills and Woodside.
When you get to Woodside ,go upstairs and catch the # 7 train - the only one- to Grand Central Station
At Grand Central take Metro North to the White Plains Station and from there you will need to take a cab the 3 or 4 miles to Purchase
If you hit everything just right you can do this in 90-100 minutes at the very worst you are looking at 2.5 hours.
Returning is same thing Metro North to Grand Central , # 7 train[ Flushing line] to 61st Woodside and LIRR to Jamaica and the Air Train to JFK
The reason that I sent you to Woodside rather than straight into Penn Station is that at that hour Penn is literally packed with people and you would have to navigate it all , catch a subway and then catch another subway -too weird
BTW if you are hungry when you get to woodside go downstairs onto 61 st street there is a Greek Coffee shop right there. In NYC most of the diners and coffe shops are owned by Greeks

Where in Purchase? An easier way -- once you arrive at JFK, in the baggage claim area look for the phones for ground transportation. Call Red Dot Airport Shuttle (or call them at 1-800-673-3368) to take you to the Rye Town Hilton (if you are running short on time) then a 2 mile cab ride to Pepsi, SUNY, 4 mile ride to Manhattanville, MasterCharge, and the office parks on Manhattanville Rd.) A cab or the #13 bus can take you to the office parks along Westchester Ave/Corporate Park Drive. You can also take Red Dot into White Plains and get the #12 bus (runs once an hour) to Manhattanville, SUNY and Pepsi.
