Probably the bad fishy breath of the beastie.

Actually, there's some argument about what swallowed Jonah. The King James Bible does not say "great fish," (Jonah 1:17) not "whale." Matthew, on the other hand, says it's a whale (in some translations), but the original Greek calls it a "sea monster."

I don't know, but for a while there in the 1800's PT Barnum paraded around a guy he called the modern Jonah : apparantly a fisherman swallowed by a large fish of some sort and resqued a day or two later near England, he was deformed from the actions of the acids in the fish's stomach, which, by the way, lends credence to the way the people responded to Jonah in the Biblical account....

air.whales breath air.
Certainly Jonah needed a miracle to survive inside the fish that swallowed him. While it is true that there are some accounts of sailors being swallowed alive by whales and surviving the experience, many people doubt these accounts and the stories cannot now be verified. The arrival of the fish was a miracle, too, as was the fact that it took Jonah safely to land. But why is it so hard to believe that Jehovah God could have preserved Jonah miraculously in the belly of the fish? don’t you believe in the resurrection of Jesus? That required miraculous help from Jehovah God.

The Bible does not say he lived in a "whale" The Bible speaks of a large fish. This fish was something God has prepared for Jonah. So there is no question that Jonah could live successfully in this creature.
