When I was a flaming redhead, I loved it, but it was a lot of work. I used permanent color, but then when I was done coloring, I dried it, then went right over the top of it with a conditioning color gloss semi-permanent. Let it process for 10 minutes, then rinsed in tepid water. I used a shampoo/conditioner that was for cool-toned redheads. That helped the color to stay more vibrant.
When hair is porous, color falls right out of it. Here's my list of to do's for redheads/permanent color that fades:
1. Wash hair only when necessary using cooler/tepid water.
Hot water opens up the cuticle and speeds up the fading process!
2. Use a quality color protect shampoo/conditoner. Preferably with no sulfates. Tea Laurel Sulfate, Sodium Laurel Sulfate are one of the worst culprits for fading.
3. For help keeping the red more vibrant between coloring, use a colored shampoo/conditioner. I used a cool red toned product. Logics used to make one, Artec has a great colored shampoo/conditioner line, Redkin used to have one too. Hopefully, they still do. (Haven't used any of em for years!)
4. Stay out of tanning beds, or at least wrap your hair in a towel while you're in there. When your outside for a long period of time, make sure you wear a hat. UV rays definitely speed up the fading.
5. Use styling products that have some UV protection in them. Just walking to and from your car, in and out of the house/work, and the exposure to that minimal UV rays can cause fading. Protect your color!!!!!!!
6. Use a quality deep treatment/reconstructor/reconditioner type product regularly on your hair to help with porosity and help keep the protein/moisture balance to your hair. Healthy hair will hold better color and won't look like "crispy" color! :)
Also, from my experience, the first couple times I did my raving red color, it didn't "take" as well, but then as I did it more, it really helped the red to "set" better. I could go into all that, but it would take too long!! Also, have a pro do it. A colorist sometimes has to use different volumes of developer on the new growth as opposed to the shaft and ends of the hair. Depending on the situation, that could make the difference as well as to how it holds. When you do it yourself, you don't have the supplies or the expertise to know what a particular color situation might call for. It is way more difficult than just picking up a bottle and slapping it on and hoping for the best. Some people get away with that with no problems, I applaud them. But for a majority of people with various hair issues, that will not work, and you end up with a disaster or with unsatisfactory results. Hope all this helps! Good luck!

My hair fades really fast too. It is just the type of hair we have, some people can hold a color much longer. I found a great salon that is so inexpensive that I really do not mind having to constantly get touch ups due to fading. You can try to ask for a redo, I did when I went to the high end places and they still wanted me to pay half!!

Ok first of all I hope you have learned your lesson when it comes to over the counter temporary hair dyes. Over the counter permanent hair dyes are the same way!! Next time you want a wash in color talk to your stylist they should carry wash in color, and they should be willing to work with you! How long did the box say that it would last? They usually only last til the next wash, sometimes they last for 3 - 10 washings depends upon the product, and I don't use over the counter products so I don't know how long that it would actually last. Please next time talk to your stylist. They should have professional wash ins.

try using a different brand of color-some brands just aren't good-also try shampooing less and using a color shampoo-one for color treated hair--u may even try a filler first-the texture(porosity) of your hair may be preventing the color from "holding"---hope I helped :O)
