When it became against the law. That is the when and why. If it was not against the law to burn "heretics" today, it would still be happening in the name of ______.
And for the people saying few X-tians burned people at the stake. Check your history, it was a time called slavery, jim crow era, civil rights era, where X-tains not only burned, raped, beat, and lynched other (Hebrew) X-tians, but also burned their churches. Until that became against the law. They also beat and persecuted Jews here.

All kinds of Christians burned witches at the stake.
Interesting though, is that Catholics burned Bible believing Christians at the stake during the Reformation.

Most of those burned at the stake were true Christians being persecuted for following their conscience. The perpetrators were religious pseudo-christians.
It has never been the custom of true followers of Jesus Christ to resort to such things, although sadly, there have been exceptions.

No Christian ever started burning anyone at a stake. Unfortunately for the church, there has not been a shortage of people who seize the name of Christ for their own ends. "And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force" (Matthew 11:12).

burning people is not a christian tenet to begin with. Those in the past who did this will have to answer to God. I imagine it stopped because people finally realized that is not what God desired. When did it stop? I don't know for sure.

When politicians quit burning people at the stake.
The politicians set up the system of 'political correctness cops' back then.
Most christians do not and did not support this practice.
