The tradition in question is UEW (Universal Eclectic Wicca). I dislike quite strongly being told what to do, but would like the camaraderie of being part of a close-knit coven. UEW seems very liberal and accepting of differences in opinion.

Don't have the time right now to read "Covencraft". But what are some good and bad points to covendom?

Let's take bets on how many serious answers I get, versus how many answers condemning me to eternal hell and whatnot.

Elf, you don't have to be a part of a "coven" or anything to be Wiccan and you don't have to go to church to be a Christian. It's like they say "If going to church makes you Christian, then does going to a garage make you a car?" it's all just a big business.

There is no statement that you have attend a service or whatever to be this or that.

You can be a perfectly good Wiccan in or out of a covenant.

Since you asked for opinions,
No, it doesn't sound like you're ready. If you are asking on here, it shows that you have doubt. Your doubts need to be addressed fully first. What's the rush anyway? Isn't this a lifelong commitment? If so, take the time to think it over, research other options, and know exactly what you want any why. Does this group have any outer-court events that you can attend? Why can't you build friendships with the members individually first before joining the coven? Will they only talk to you if you're a member?

You don't say how long you've known these people personally and have been learning about their coven. But if you chose to wait until there is no doubt that this is the specific coven you want to join, then joining would have a much deeper meaning to you.
I agree with who ever suggested for you to read "Covencraft". If this coven doesn't like the fact that you'd rather wait and learn a little more first, I'd wonder about their motives. I don't know why they aren't encouraging you to research first. ALL of the reputable covens in my area require that a potential member get to know the coven members well and that they research other pagan paths besides theirs so that the person can make an informed decision and that their commitment is lasting.

It depends on who you're asking. There are some Wiccans who believe that you have to be initiated into a coven to be a Wiccan. Then there are others (myself included) that feel the initiation is between the individual and the gods. If you know of a coven that you would join and feel comfortable with it, go ahead. It's a good thing to be able to be around like-minded people who can teach you. But finding a coven can be difficult, especially if one is unfortunate and happens to live in the accursed Bible Belt. If that's the case, solitary's the way to go. There are a few books that I have found helpful, but my favorite is "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham. You can also enter Solitary Wicca into a search engine and find some helpful sites. Good luck with all your endeavors!

From what I've read, covens provide a good sense of community and support. It's a chance to be with other Wiccans and not have to worry about people saying stupid things like condemning you to hell or summat.

If you aren't sure, don't do it. Have you thought about a study group instead? Or maybe just going to a wiccan meetup to meet others?

I have great distrust of covens, please be careful, if you want friendship and camaraderie, join some group you have an interest in, like religion, flower arranging, bridge, there are so many options. good luck my friend.

Unless you want to get involved with demons you should probably get out of the coven (or any coven for that matter) right now. It's not white or light, it's witchcraft. Witchcraft WILL involve you with spirits that will want to hurt you. Don't say no one warned you. Try to take a more scientific look at any special things you want to do.

If you are still young enough to still enjoy playing pretense sure go ahead it might be fun. Don't let them give you unsightly tattoos and body piercings and you should be ok. Its all nonsense just know that. Hisszzzzzzzzz
