The age to be a policeman is 21. It is not something you do - It is something you become. If you want to do it - then all you will do is pin on a badge and say look at me I am a lawman - If you become a lawman - You truly care about a real victim - You go after the bad guy with your heart and soul. when you become a lawman - you sacrifice - birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. You look back in the years behind and think " Did my sacrifices make a difference" - When you look ahead and find yourself alone " Was it worth it" - It takes a strong family to withstand the stresses of the job.

In the State of California its 18, but most agencies won't hire you untill you are 21 years of age, If your barely going to be 18, I would advise you to apply and try to get hired working as a Correctional officer for a County jail so you can get your Law Enforcement experience there, that way you lean to deal with people.

Most Police Departments will not allow someone to enter their academy until that individual is 21 yrs old. In Chicago, where I has been working for 30 years, you must be 21 yrs old and have a mininum of 60 hours of College credit, or 4 years of military service.

Although most states require you to be at least 21, this doesn't mean you can't start preparing for your career.
Check to see if any local departments have explorer programs. Also, some states will allow you to start the academy when you are 20, as long as you are 21 at the time of graduation.
