I had a very bad, constant headache several years ago following a concussion from a car accident. It lasted almost a year, I almost dropped out of college, I couldn't function. After having numerous tests, I was finally referred to a brain surgeon. He said, "I've never said this before, but I think you should go to a chiropractor" I went, and the headache was gone in less than a month. It's not cheap, but it's something to try, you never know, it might work.

I have an ex-colleague who had headache 24/7 for a couple of months and went to different doctors and scans but couldn't find out the cause too. After that, she went into hospital for more observations and found blood clot in her brain that is causing the headache. She had to remove it immediately by surgery and since then, her headache was gone.

Maybe you should bring her to hospital and do more scanning and tests on her brain.

Hope she gets well soon!

If she's made the usual circuit to all the different possible doctors (like an ENT, or a dentist or surgeon for TMJ, Neurologist, or an ophthalmologist) for a symptom like you're describing; the only real thing to do is start again. Get a second opinion from more doctors. Keep pushing until she finds a diagnosis. If she hasn't seen someone for TMJ, you might start there. I'm not a clinician, by any means, but I know you have to be your own advocate in a situation like yours. Good luck!

Well I have had headaches since I was very young. If they dont find anything on scans then its is most likely migraines, hers sound like cluster headaches. All I could ever get to help mine was Max-Alt but its not for anyone with high blood pressure or heart disease. Also I was on an antidepressant not for depression but migraine,it really worked for me.

Hot baths and strong pain relievers and rest in bed in a dark room. Maybe something for anxiety.

I feel for her I know what she is going through. I hope she finds a doctor soon that will treat her for the problem and the pain.

Good luck to you and your Mom.

If it is a migraine headache, topamax is one of the best medicines for migraine prevention. The medication has side effects that go away the longer you are on it. I'm on it and have few side effects. The first week was hell though. I hope your mom does better and the doctors find out what is wrong. It almost sounds like a jaw infection though. I had contant jaw/face pain for two years and went to many doctors after dental surgery. They didn't find anything on their tests so they didn't give me antibiotics. It made me sicker and sicker and then I just got better for no reason. It was weird. On a routine cleaning, another dentist did a x-ray and told me I had a piece of broken tooth in me and he took it out. So, if your mom had dental work done, I would tell her to go on antibiotics or do what I did and get that tooth pulled.

Try this ......watch her when she's sleeping and see if she is clenching her jaw. Happened to me - I had an MRI and everything. One day I'm at the dentist and he asked a routine question, you know the, what other medical procedures have you had in the past 6 months? one, and I told him about the MRI and the first thing he asks is if I clench my jaw at night. My hubby said I did and the dentist made a protector for me that you wear at night. It took about a week to get used to it (I'm a picky sleeper) but then I felt great!! My pain went from my eye to my temple down to my ear and then down to my neck (but it was both sides) - basically all your face muscles and it never went away - Dr. said the muscles were constantly spasming. We had tried the regular doc, the ear doc, the eye doc and then it was the dentist who figured it all out. Go figure! Anyway, keep trying and keep bugging the doctors cause one of these days you'll say one little thing to someone and boom, it will all be figured out. I hope it will come sooner rather than later. Take care!

Drs are lame when it comes to a common headache. But from what Ive gathered so far is there are tons of reasons you have to narrow them down by trial and error.
1. Allergies-air, cats, dogs, pollution, spring, dry air, whatever. Try cleaning A LOT! Claritin D.
2. Acid Reflex- my Dr. said I got them from eating late dinners and drinking water through out the night. Supposivley when you lay down after filling the stomach, the stomach acids easily creep up the esophogas to your throat area.........thus causing ear aches, jaw pain, headaches. So eat 3 hours prior to bed, change diet to less heartburn, no water through out the night. Its tough!!!!
3. Stress-major cause is stress induced migraines
4. Genetic migranes
5. Dehydration-lack of bodys need for correct amount of water
6. Certain foods-this will be a test.......some say chocolate
7. Incorrect eye glass prescription
8. Anxiety and frustration.
9. Shitty diet......McDonalds, fried foods. Not enough veggies and fruits!
10. Coffee or tea or anything w/ caffine-will cause dehydration
11. Hangovers, etc.
Good luck, I hope the best for you and your mom.

If it is only one one side of her head then I would think it would be related to sinuses. You said that she had an MRI of her head but did they do a CT scan or her sinuses? Has she gone to an ear nose/throat doctor? That would be my suggesiong. In the mean time the best thing for the bain would be an NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatory drug) such as Motrin, Alleve, Advil or Ibuprofen for the pain along with a decongestant like Claritin D or Pseudophed. Is her blood pressure okay? A lot of times if your blood pressure is too high you will get bad headaches.
