Lateral resistance exercise. You need to develop pectoral, back, and triceps muscles.. Punch speed is more based on muscle contraction. If you've seen the machine that is mounted on the wall with the cables that attach to weights on the floor, you might want to use it.
A punch is an explosion, so you don't need huge muscles to be fast. You need to work on fast (twitch) fiber muscle tissues.
Resistance during a punch will increase the speed of the punch when there is no resistance.
Ali said that he trained in water to increase speed, but he only said that for a sports illustrated interview. He didn't actually train that way.
Still, lean muscle has more of the 'snap' you desire. Bulk muscle tends to be slower. In fact, some muscle groups will impede your ability to throw a faster punch.
The one thing you really need to remember is the mid section. The entire upper body needs to pivot and remain supported while fighting. A good strong core will help you put the power where you want it.
And just for the record, I am a former boxer

Improving your speed is a little difficult. My suggestion would be to take some light weights, maybe 2-3 pounds, and just do some air jabs. 20-30 should be good for each arm. You could also try resistance exercises with one of those stretchy exercise cords. Find a pole of some sort (make sure it's solid!), wrap the cord around it, take hold of the handles, and punch into the air away from the pole. Both of these exercises will build muscle and make you feel like your hands are weightless afterwards. Happy... punching?

hmm, I'm no expert but here is what I do.
Throw a lot of punches with focus on speed. Just throw them in the air as fast as you can. Ofcourse, keep proper form and keep those hands up. Relax your arsm and do not put power behind them. They should be more like a snap. Yes, it will seems like you are doing a lot of slaps or touches. The exercice is not meant to knock anybody out. Its to develop explisivity and speed. After a while then add power but do so at the end of the punch. Think of a whip. The whip cracks at the end. Its not craking fro the beggining. Also, power comes from the hip not from the arms.

Work on your anterior deltoids, biceps brachii, coracobrachialis, triceps brachii and your pectoralis major and minor. Work on your back and neck muscles, too. Working your quadriceps can help put some force into your punch when you go to lunge. I'd have to watch you punch, but this is an excellent place to start.

Triceps, biceps, shoulders, chest.
You should do exercise not with heavy weight, but with light weight and try to do as much as you can. My suggestion is about 30 repetitions, then you can add weight.
