I drink roughly 70 ounces of water a day and walk/run on my treadmill for 1 hour, 3-4 times a week and sweat while I'm at it. I'm 22 yrs old 5'8 and weigh about 155. My Mom and older sister say that I need to take 1/4 teaspoon of straight salt a day to stay healthy...Is this true or will it hurt me?

That's way too much sodium. You need to check with your physician to see what the best amount of sodium would be for your body type, age, etc. However, if you have too much sodium, you could suffer from dehydration, among other things. I hope this helps.

The salt in your food should be enough. Too much salt can make you retain water, and cause high blood pressure--even stroke.

Remember that there is salt in: all lunch meats, all canned foods, chocolate, soda, cake, mustard, ketchup, etc. If you are eating a healthy diet which has no salt in it, you may need to add a bit to your meals--but not 1/4 teaspoon straight.

That much salt will not kill you but it is not good for health. See below site under losing water weight. Now you can prove this. Get your older sister to put 4 ozs of salt (several tablespoons) in a pint of water and drink it down.

She will then need to be rushed to the hospital but she will probably die. Yes that much will kill you. That is how much a quarter-pounder burger weighs but eat 10 of them and it will not kill you. Or put a tablespoon of salt on your mother's dinner and she will have throw it away since it tastes so bad.

it wouldnt hurt with the exercise you do. But its really unnecessary because in the world we live in, EVERYTHING has salt. So you really dont need to take any.

thats gross anyways taking salt like that. if you really want to take salt, they sell salt pills for athletes who sweat alot.
