There are people writing things about dogs that have devoted their lives to understanding dogs Some have written about it. Some have have achieved Advanced Degrees studying dog behavior and all trained and rehabilitated thousands of dogs between them. People like Suzanne Clothier, Dr. Ian Dunbar, Dr. Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson, Turid Rugaas, Leslie Nelson, Terry Ryan, Steve White, Karen Pryor, Ray Coppinger, Bobby Anderson, John Rogerson, Brenda Aloff, Pamela Dennison, Roger Abrantes, Nicole Wilde, and more.

Yet, if some former illegal immigrant who happens to be good at handling and scaring the crap out of dogs gets a TV show, everybody believes everything he says, in spite of how many dogs he hasn't helped (they don't show that part of TV) or how many dogs went on to bite their own owners afterwards. (lots of them. I have a client who was a vet in Orange County and met many dogs fixed by Cesar, who had to be put down when he was finished with them)

WorkingK9s2000, visit a dog day care if you want to see that many dogs getting along. It happens daily in thousands of dog day care facilities all across the country. That isn't a big deal. Cesar is selling you a load of crap when he says it is because of his "leadership" and "Calm assertive energy" hogwash. It is simple normal canine social behavior to mind one's manners (gross generalization) in a large group of dogs. Dogs are brilliant at enforcing proper behavior without the help of some yahoo with delusions of doGhood.

I've seen as many as 70 dogs all getting along on a regular basis.

how can he have 30 plus dogs look to him as leader no fighting ect...its not the dogs its the people who own the dogs and think oh look how cute my little dog is growling or nipping or whatever but the u have the pitt bull who can be a great dog if trained and owned but the right person,
not every dog can be saved i'm sure Cesar has lost a few as any other trainer or behaviorist and if ppl don't follow through then i'm sure it will happen and PHd's does not make them better and it means they paid money for commonsense really aren't all trainers and behaviorist doing what most ppl could do. i have been working with dogs at home and shelter since i was a kid, and been doing what cesar does it works for me..

some ppl should not own dogs that why there are so many "problem animals"...really it's problem people

Well people do not want to put work into a dog. I have seen the show and most of the problems the dogs have could have been prevented in the first place with a socialization, training and discipline, another thing that could have prevented the problem the dogs have is research. There are far too many people buying dogs for what they look like rather then buying them for the traits and temperament they have. Most people have no clue what the dog was specifically bred for and then they end up with problems because they buy a GSD and it is territorial or they buy a border collie and it chases the kids and nips at their feet , etc, etc, etc.
To directly answer your question yes I would much rather take advice from those that have put countless hours of time and research into learning about dogs. However the average person just wants a quick fix and they heard his methods work and he is wonderful so why not. Again, if they would put in a little research and they would find out differently.

I own a dog day care, we usually run between 35-55 dogs on a daily basis, all sizes, ages and breeds. Dogs are social animals, but not really pack animals ( I know, heresy). They are excellent at establishing social order. The older more experienced dogs teach the younger dogs.

There is nothing magical or special about Cesar's way. He has a particular way with dogs himself, but lots of his methods have been discredited for years.

Cesar is correct in many areas:
Dogs need to be exercised (all dog trainers agree)
Dogs need leadership (all dog trainers agree)
Dogs need to know the rules (all dog trainers agree)
Dogs need for us to be calm (all dog trainers agree)

There was a study of wolves done in the '40s, where much of the info used by Cesar and other forced based trainers got their ideas for things like dominance and alpha rolls. Most of that info became discredited later, after a 30 year study of DOGS was done by Dr. Frank Beach (Dr. Ian Dunbar participated)

The alpha roll was completely discredited. Force only teaches a dog to use force. Positive Training gets confused in some people's minds as "lacking boundaries and rules" but that is not true. Positive Training may appear to take longer, but it has been proven to have fewer adverse side effects with the dog.

Why is it so hard for people to train a dog in a fashion that the dog can enjoy too? Why do they really seem to want to abuse the dog in the name of training?

If you dare, read the article I've listed as my source.

There's something to be said for experience rather than college degrees. All the people you mentioned are great at what they do but I don't agree with everything they write including Cesar. There are many top level trainers out there that don't have degrees. I put faith in their ability with dogs, not how many letters come after their name. What I'd like to see from Cesars detactors is to get that many dogs to all get along.

I appreciate you opening the door on Cesar. I get what you're saying completely!

I trust my vet completely (for 13 years now) and even HE thinks that Cesar is just taking advantage of what EVERYONE could do themselves if they would only learn something about dogs prior to getting them.

Dog eat dog world though......

Its about time someone said something! If someones gonna devote their life to understanding dogs..They should be the ones you listen to...not someone who has a camera on him and a whole pack of dogs of his own..
