Ok, I HATE seeing all these uneducated answers. First, the Cherokee is most defentally designed for off road use. It shares axles, transfercase, engine all with 06 and earlier wranglers. It's longer wheelbase makes it more stable on hill climbs. It has better approach, breakover, and deparure angles then the Liberty. The AW4 automatic trany is near bullet proof. take it from somone who owns 2 cherokees, and has helped biuld up numerous jeeps including a now V8 CJ, cherokee over liberty all day. and that "cherokees are biult for the road" is bull sh*t. just my 2cents. want reall jeep opinions... www.jeepforum.com

The Cherokee Sport was built for offroad use, while the Liberty has supposedly been trail rated, the Cherokee's have been offroaded for many years with great results. The Jeep Liberty is more of a luxury SUV than something that a person would use for offroading and potentially damaging. The Jeep Cherokee's have the 4.0 Liter inline 6 engines in them which have proved over the years that they are very reliable and bulletproof engines.

I have owned CJ's, Wranglers, Cherokees, and a Liberty. All have been capable off road vehicles with minor modifications to the tires and suspension. I go into the desert regularly and go where there are scant trails and all different types of terrain. The two short comings I had with the Cherokee and the Liberty were corrected by a locking rear diff, larger tires and a moderate lift. It is my experience that the 2 door Cherokee accepted these modifications better than the 4 door because of rear wheel clearance. I am not a high speed off roader where serious wheel travel is required, but rather an adventurer and explorer of old mining sites and ghost towns which require access up very steep rocky trails. The CJ and Wrangler have the shortest wheel bases for negotiating tight turns. The Cherokee and Liberty have enclosed driving compartments (less dust) and more cargo room. So it depends on your individual needs to decide which is best for you. FYI, I have switched from Jeeps to a Diesel Super Duty Ford F350 Crew cab 4x4 with a modified suspension and tires. None of the Jeeps could haul the equipment I needed to carry.

I'm going to say they're both potentially VERY capable, but the Liberty is actually better. Liberty with the Renegade package is pretty good straight out of the box off-road. I've owned both Cherokee and two Libby's and love all of them.
Cherokees are rock solid vehicles for light off road use like camping and stuff. Both Libby and Cherokee have great ground clearance.
If you're talking serious off-road though, you'll want to consider some modifications though. But generally speaking, both thesae vehicles are well built, especially the Libby, which seems almost like a Mercedes the way the body panels are so well crafted. I've seen some AWESOME Libby's fixed up fort the trail with big tires, bullbars and winches, and some beastly Cherokees as well.

if its a cherokee and not a grand cherokee i would definitly go with the cherokee because they are way way more capable then the liberty. mainly because of one thing solid front axle. having that solid front is way better for flexing and wheeling then the independent front of the liberty. also the cherokee comes with the 4.0 high output 6 which is way way better and way more powerful then the 3.7 v6 or what ever it is they have in those liberties. finally the cherokees have way more after market parts and lifts that you can get over the liberty so you can modify your cherokee any which way you want where the liberty only has a hand full of mods so. they both hold the same amount of people but you also can usually get the cherokee for a lot cheaper then the liberty.

The Cherokee Sport is a proven basically design with an engine known far and wide for going 250,000 or more miles easily. Mine has 199,000 miles on it and it does great.
I do have fairly aggressive tires on it which made a huge difference in how it does off-road. I didn't however opt for a lift kit and other expensive mods.
The liberty just doesn't have the bullet-proof reputation. I was also disappointed by the mileage reports. I thought a smaller newer design would spank me on mileage but it doesn't.
I do have the high output six cylinder in mine and it will shame the regular six cylinder in Cherokees..
Good luck on whatever you decide.

Go to this site and search for the word jeep.

There is a video of a Cherokee being put through it's paces before getting killed. Though the guys in the video are idiots it has proven to me that the Cherokee, or any Jeep for that matter, is the most incredible vehicle on the planet.

Would you people stop it with the trail rated crap already. Its a sticker that Chrysler's marketing dept came up with for non off roading customers to feel proud of. Nothing more!
I have seen a bone stock Cherokee go Thurough some stuff that would make a "Trail Rated" Liberty whimper!
So don't get caught up in the sticker hype.....a Jeep is only as capable as its owner/driver!

Neither is good for off road. If you plan on doing serious off roading go with a wrangler. They are better designed for this type treatment. THe Cherokee and liberty are designed for road use mainly. Now if you are just going off road to go through a slightly rough field or something where you are not rock crawling the others will be fine. It all comes down to what you want to do with it.
