yes, and if the school does n ot have a standard for grades then the parents should and in an ideal situation BOTH should have a minimum grade point for sports participation. Participation in sports is not part of the state mandated curriculum for graduation. You don't have to play sports to graduate. If a student cannot get passing grades then sports needs to be put on the back burner until the time and energy spent on sports is redirected to studying.

Sign up for the sport with which you are most familiar. Even if it's one you mostly only see on television. That way, the rules will be familiar. Remember, most school sports are offered at different levels. A school freshman or sophomore will not be expected to compete on a varsity squad. Also, spend any time you have left, before sign-ups, conditioning your body. Start running and a little bit of low stress weight lifteng. Try other aerobic exercises. You want to START in reasonably good shape, long befre the coaches get hold of you. Worried about all of your friends making fun of you? I'll bet not many of THEM make the cut. I'm willing to bet, further, that not many of them even TRY. Just trying out puts you one up on them. If you make the team, the coaches will teach you the basics. In fact, they will probably assume none of you know as much about PLAYING the game as you know abut watching it. You won't get a chance to make a mistake durning a game, because they won't let you on the field until you know what you are doing. They don't want you or anyone else hurt. But, let's say you don't get asked to play. You can still sign up for some after school recreation leagues. These are played on a much less intense level than the intermural games. Playing a season of this will help you prepare you for playing on your school's team. You may also decide that you might do better at a sport where you compete individually, such as swimming, tennis, or golf. Some schools have bowling teams. So, go ahead and sign up!

I think students should have to get passing grades to play sports. Let's face it, a very small percentage of people will ever become professional athletes making the big bucks. Students shouldn't hold on to the slim hope that they will be one of the elite who find sports fame and, thus, neglect their studies. Therefore, the main area of focus for students should be in academics. If they make good grades, not only does it give them an opportunity to play sports, but it also ensures that, should they not find a prestigious sport career, they will always have their knowledge to fall back on and will be able to find a job that will provide them with a good quality of life.
