We are seeing old friends this weekend who love trying unusual or old-fashioned cocktails. Any suggestions for something cool to make when they are here? Thanks!!

The sidecar is a classy drink. 1.5 oz cognac (I use Hennessey or Courvosier), 1 oz Cointreau, 1/2oz fresh squeezed lemon juice. Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with lemon and line the rim with sugar. Shake the other ingredients over ice and strain into the glass. Garnish with lemon.

Try a manhattan:

3/4 oz sweet vermouth
2 1/2 oz bourbon whiskey
1 dash Angostura® bitters
1 maraschino cherry
1 twist orange peel

Combine the vermouth, bourbon whiskey, and bitters with 2 - 3 ice cubes in a mixing glass. Stir gently, don't bruise the spirits and cloud the drink. Place the cherry in a chilled cocktail glass and strain the whiskey mixture over the cherry. Rub the cut edge of the orange peel over the rim of the glass and twist it over the drink to release the oils but don't drop it in.

VARIATION: No bitters. Substitute a twist of lime for the cherry and orange. Hold the lime twist in a lighted match over the drink and then drop it in. The heat really zips up the lime flavor.

A good cold weather cocktail is a Rusty Nail.

1 1/2 oz Good Scotch (Dewars)
1/2 oz Drambuie
1 Lemon Twist

Chill old fashioned glass, rim with twist. Add ice to 1/2 fill, I prefer shaved or teeny cubes. Add scotch, then drambuie, then twist. Sip. Sip. Ummmm.

WebTender's is a great site, especially for classic beverages.

Gimlets have been around since the 1940s. Is usually made out of equal parts of Rose's lime and Gin. Some people including myself prefer Vodka to Gin. 1 oz of Grey Goose or your favorite Vodka and 1 oz Rose's lime shaken with ice makes the best Gimlet.
