I personally have had a root canal and it's not that bad. There's advanced technology that have successfully merged and dramatically changed the experience of going to the dentist. Modern comforts and high-tech equipment offer patients almost painless dental visits. Search around your area for a dentist that offers these services like aromatherapy candles, masage charis, etc. Sounds funny but there are dentists out there. Google dentists in your area. Good luck! It's better to get it taken care of before it gets worst and sometimes, a toothache may just mean you need a filling.

If you see a black dot, then it's definitely decay. How deep or big is unknown without a x ray or the dentist actually removing the decay.

If it's just hurting when you eat and drink, or to air being sucked in over it, more than likely it just needs a filling.

If it's waking you up at night throbbing, and your having to take Tylenol or Advil to ease the pain, then you're probably looking at an abscess starting and the tooth needs a root canal.

I can tell your afraid, because it's your "right left tooth". I won't rub it in! Seriously though, call your dentist and let them know about your fear. There are measures they can take to help you even prescribing medication to relax you. If you let them know they can help you. But you really need to go in to get the x ray to see what is wrong. A small cavity can turn into a larger cavity, that keeps getting bigger until the tooth needs a root canal or worse yet an extraction. Letting it go is detrimental to the tooth as well as your pocket book. Small fillings are around $100.00 a root canal that will need a crown after it's done is well over $1000.00. Call your Dentist, he's there to help you with your tooth and even your problem. Good luck, hope I've been of some help.

Eventually you will be in so much pain that you will have no choice but to go to the dentist, so I highly suggest you go now. The longer you wait, the higher the chance is that you will need a root canal, and if you do need a root canal, the longer you wait the worse it will be. On a positive note, if you haven't waited long and this tooth hasn't had a problem for a very long time, a root canal will likely not be painful (you usually barely feel a thing, only when a tooth has a severe cavity does it sometimes hurt). Chances are, from what you've said, you won't need one...but that's only if you go to the dentist now! He will probably just need to do a regular filling and it'll be quick - really nothing to fear.

When you have a cavity, hot and cold sensitivity can be expected. And a filling might be able to fix the job. Mind you.. just cause its small on the outside (the small black dot)..DOES NOT mean, its actually small on the inside of the tooth. My advice.. Go to your dentist and get it taken care of, before it does get out of hand, and a Root Canal is in order!

Question you need to ask yourself... Does it keep you up at night? Does it throb..? IF your answers are YES.. Hate to tell you, but you've waited to long. Root Canal, is your only obtion. And if its a back tooth, a Crown will be needed as well.

If your NOT experiencing throbbing and its NOT keeping you up at night, most likely your still in good shape. Go to your dentist and get it sorted... BEFORE it gets worse.

And BTW... Root Canals, are no biggie... its an easy procedure, you'll be fine!!

You won't know that you need a root canal until you get an Xray at your 6 month check up OR you have UNBELIEVABLE pain in your mouth.

Since your cavity hurts, get it filled (filling).

You probably just need a regular filling. Don't stress. Even in the worse case and you do, it really is no different then a filling just a different process.
