It's not that it makes you tell the truth, so much as it lowers your inhibitions so you feel no reason to lie. It doesn't work for everyone, it depends on what kind of drunk you are and how many drinks you've had. Alcohol isn't a guaranteed lie detector--if it were, the police would probably use it in interrogations.

There is an old saying the drunk mouth tells what sober mind thinks.. It seems to accurate..

It did in Tombstone Doc holliday "In wine I speak the truth" only he said it in Latin..

It's not a truth serum though..
