since its a beach town your chances of getting a huge home might be difficult and place you in financial hardship. But who cares what type of home you live in, what ever you and your kids are comfortable with ..........then thats all there is to it. Besides I'm sure you'll be at work, school, or at the beach, or in the park for most of the time =)

San Diego is pretty well to do. The "bad" neighborhoods here are not anywhere close to as dangerous as my moderately decent neighborhood in Chicago (where I lived before here). It is also a very large city (geographically speaking). The first poster is correct about looking in a radius from where you are working. It is 70 Miles from the top of the county to the border. I pay $2k for a 3/2 in Encinitas (North County Coastal) because I don't want to commute in to my work from further out. $1k may be a stretch anywhere, but here are some of your better bets: North County Coastal: Vista, San Marcos, Oceanside North County Inland: Escondido, Poway, Mira Mesa Central: Northpark South: Spring Valley, Chula Vista, Bonita East: El Cajon, La Mesa, Alpine, Julian

I recommend renting house for typically $1500/mo, condo ($1200)? the San Diego real estate market is in a slump. Property may be overvalued at $500,000 for 3br, 2ba. If you wait two years to buy, you can get into a nicer home for cheaper then right now, plus you get to know the area. I would say San Carlos, I think it's San Diego best kept secret it's safe, quiet and reasonably priced.
While unemployment is quite low, it would seem that you need to seek job(s) before housing.

Unless you and your significant other have real good jobs or access to good money then you will live in a rental or SMALL condo/towmhome. It is VERY expensive in SD. That's why I moved away. We just couldn't afford it anymore. Most young families there rent, but the rent is very high. I wish you good luck though, If we could I would definitly move back in a heartbeat. I love it down there.
