Well, I assume your friend isn't going to not like you because of your gift, and if so, she wasn't really a friend in the first place.
If you are asking in terms of etiquite, there is not standard, because etiquite dictates that gift registries are rude. It's rude to EXPECT people will get you a gift... so, what ever you get them will be appropriate... (I'm not knockin' on your friend, I assume she's a nice person, I'm just telling you what I know)

Sure. It's your gift! Give them what you want. (Although a gift basket of the "small" stuff often make the best gifts)
A registry is a guide. It depends on the bride and groom. Some are the type that if you buy off the list, you run the risk of them returning or regifting. But that is their right to do once you give them the gift.
Besides, often they register only at one store to make it easier for guests. You can't tell me that everything they would appreciate can be found in one location.
I just gave a shower and quite a few people had bought "off the list" and the bride was very exciting because she genuinely loved them AND they were a surprise to her.

You can go off the list, or you can get what is left on the list and than send a card with money in it. They appanently want pot holders if it was on the list. But if you feel like its just not working for you, than send a card with money inside, or you can just get them a gift card which makes a great gift and they will guarenteed to use it.

You can absolutely go off the list. You don't even have to get them something traditional - get them anything you want to! I think the more creative gifts are more fun! Since I don't know you, I can't recommend a gift that would be 'you' too, but I know you'll come up with something great!

I had the same problem with a baby shower. I ended up waiting too long & was left with just the little gifts. I ended up buying several things, plus a really nice basket, & making a really nice gift basket. It was a big hit. Of course it's up to you, but if she's listed stuff, even little things, she must need them.

I think you can get them whatever you would like to give them. A list or registry, in my opinion, should be just "suggestions," but they seem to have become like the tail wagging the dog. If it were me, I'd appreciate getting a thoughtful and original gift.

Get a few gifts. Apparently, she really needs those things. Or get something on the list and something off the list.

I really actually appreciated the small gifts that I got as wedding presents. Your friend put stuff like that on her registry because she wanted it. But if u really want to get her something off the list, I really think it's okay
I actually wish I had gotten more little gadgets and gizmos than dishes or microwaves (we got three, one is enough for me!)

A great card & a gift card to her favorite store ... this is about what they need not about "you" ... if you feel you need to make it unique than maybe get them something that will reflect something you all did in the past ... like a restaurant or place you visited.

I agree with the gift card to the store she registered at. LOL- funny I just ask my friend where she registered so I could get first pickens and she thought I was nuts.
