My friend is based in Twentynine Palms, CA. He's going to Hawaii. Does he get any guarunteed leave (like time to spend with his family) before he ships off to another continent?

He's not shipping out as a unit. He's just being transferred for either some more training or just a basic posting. This will be the first time he's been outside the 48 states.

LOL!!! There are no guarantees in the military in general.

It really depends on how his orders were written. If they are simply PCS orders (permanent change of station - simply put, he's being transferred), then he will likely get leave and travel time to get to Hawaii.

If, however, as one of the other folks said, the whole unit is going, then probably not unless it's a normal deployment rotation.

A Marine/soldier/airman/sailor isn't guaranteed that he/she will get his/her leave while that person is "in." It is guaranteed that they will somehow get compensated for that time off - i.e. - the military can buy their leave when they get out - up to sixty days worth. Missions always come before welfare if there are live missions to be done, which there are a lot around right now. In general, however, the military does a great job of taking care of their own so they don't burn out.

Hope this helps.

Yes. Before he transfers he will have to do a tranfer check sheet. He will have to give a perspective date of departure, this will also depend on how much leave he has available to use. He will be given about 30 days of leave, plus travel and procede. He will have to ship his car as soon as possible, it can take up to 6 months before it gets to Hawaii. Plus he'll have to arrange for personal property to ship his stuff to hawaii. He'll probably be stationed at Kaneohe MCB. It's on the greener side of Oahu Island. The problem is the personal property service office is on the other side of the island in Pearl Harbor.

Yes, in most cases they do if they want it unless they ship out as a unit. Marines get 30 days a year leave time with full pay.

if he continues to be in school, then no. If he is going to his first accountability station, thaen..perhaps. his orders could have a checklist No Later Than date on them, and that's the date he truthfully needs to be at his new accountability station. If he has time between while he exams out of one in the previous he needs to learn into the different, he could be allowed to take circulate away.. assuiming he has any to apply.
