I know that it takes only about 7 minutes to die from bleeding if your wrists are cut. The one gentlemen who said the arteries aren't very close in the wrist was wrong they are right there.
One of the ways to stop bleeding is apply an ice pack to the area, this causes the blood to slow down. So it would stand to reason that warm/hot water would make the blood flow quicker and allow it to keep flowing. The other reason for the warm water is it has a place for the blood to go. Wrist slashing is a messy affair and hard for the cleanup crew.
Having attempted suicide when I was younger, I can tell you it is a quick and relatively painless way to die. Messy yes, but realtively quick and painless.

It's probably because most people who cut their wrists aren't trying to kill themselves, they are trying to get people to realize they don't fell life is worth living the way it is going for them, and they want help fixing it and some empathy.
The water makes the blood look more. It makes the extent of the injury seem greater in the eyes of the person who finds them. Next time you have nose bleed, let it drip into a sink. You'll see. The blood looks 50 times more.
Warm water is more comfortable to sit in while you wait for someone to find you than cold or room temperature water.
(Oh yeah, and please do NOT apply a tourniquet to anybodies arm who has cut themselves lengthwise or breadth wise or any wise. A tourniquet cuts off all bloodflow even to the undamaged healthy tissue. If it stays on too long, it will cause them to lose those limbs. Apply a pressure dressing to the part closest to the heart. THis slows down the blood loss, but allows it to flow enough that it will clot naturally, and no limbs will be lost.)

I don't know you, you don't know me. So, my opinion probably doesn't matter but you know what? I actually don't care. I will try, if I don't succeed at least i've tried. I reckon that you have people in your life that will miss you if you go. There will be a difference in their lives with them not being able to see you, hear your laugh, look at your beautiful smile or listen to your unique views upon everything. I don't know how old you are but what's the point in committing suicide? Your parents created YOU for a reason, it would be a waste to go. Do you really want the most occurring thing to be playing on their mind is "Why did he/she commit suicide?" "It was my fault, I wasn't a good enough parent" etc. I'm not trying to give you a guilt trip but seriously think about your actions before doing anything. Talk to a good friend, just do it. Talk to ANYONE. Just, don't be alone, you don't have to ask strangers the best way of suicide or the short/long term solutions, have a think. I'd hate to think that someone has just killed themselves and that I can't do anything about it, I wish I could be near you to tell you not to do anything, to just continue living because if you're having a really bad time and you want to give up, don't! Better things will come across you need to wait for it, be patient and all the bad things will be worth it by the good amazing times that are just waiting to come and will happen! Email me if you need someone to talk to i'm always here? Please don't do it, I'm nearly crying even though I don't know you.

I'm not sure why, but cutting the wrists and running hot water seems to have been a popular way to commit suicide since the Roman Empire. Maybe it's kind of relaxing to have the warm water and steam.

Yes, the heat would do two things: accelerate blood flow to the area and make a HUGE mess, setting up a dramatic exit. The blood would still clot, but the accelerated blood flow might cause more to spill out than normal, such that the blood wouldn't clot in time. This is why folk who are serious about dying slice lengthwise. If you see that, apply a tourniquet to both arms and then get help.

Actually, its very difficult to bleed to death from a
lacerated wrist the arteries are not large enough
to perfuse enough blood to cause death. Clotting
mechanisms, including spasm of the vessel would
prevent immediate death. You may lose enough\
blood to pass out but the bleeding would eventually
stop in a normal individual. As for the temperature
of the water, cold water actually may inhibit clotting
mechanisms making one bleed more. This was
researched with patients with upper gastrointestinal
bleeding. This is why doctors no longer use ice water
lavage to stop bleeding from a stomach ulcer.

Cold water helps stop the bleeding, so the hot water would keep the flow going better. Also if they are in the tub, maybe it is so they don't leave a mess. The blood would just drain like the water.

i would assume that the hot water would keep blood flowing and coming out
cutting your wrists isnt exactly a suicide attempt..people become addicted to self harm because the physical pain takes away the emotional pain and that is the only way they know how to cope.
seeing the blood coming out is part of the whole psychological aspect of it

Most likely they are abused as kids, the sight of blood is like letting out pressure in your body, running blood under hot water will keep it thin, Highly unlikely to bleed to death.

immersing your whole body in hot water would increase your heart rate and cause your blood to run faster but not just a wrist. it must be to prevent clotting.
