It takes me twice as long to get around.. and twice as much gas. Am I the only one who is avoiding the highways and freeways? How long until you started driving on them? I just got my license a few months ago and a new car a few weeks ago.

When I first got my license I avoided them as much as possible, because I didn't feel comfortable. But I decided I had to because I got tired of it taking so long to get places- imagine driving 50 miles on side streets! I got used to it, and it got a lot easier. I don't always take the freeways now to get places, it just depends on the freeway traffic and how fast I want to get somewhere.

I think freeways and highways can be safer to drive. You don't have to deal with people running stop signs or red lights, people crossing the street (not usually!), etc.

Good luck!

Here's a tip. You are less likely to have an accident on freeways or highways than in city streets with a lot of signals and intersections.

The two main hazards to watch out for on freeways are:

1. traffic has unexpectedly stopped in front of you. (especially dangerous in wet weather)

When you learn to avoid these hazards, you will be pretty safe on any freeway.

2. someone changing lanes into the same lane YOU are changing to. Happens when there are 3 or more lanes on your side.

i live in NJ so highway driving is almost a way of life.

you are probably avoiding them because of the way you learned to drive. i learned to drive on local streets and also went out onto the NJ turnpike twice a week and drove for about 10 miles in each direction.

if you want to get onto the highway, try it during off-peak hours when there aren't so many cars on the road and drive for long distances, the first few miles are always shaky.

Learning to drive on the freeway isn't hard to do. To start learning try to doing so on an early weekend morning. Remember it is easier to get onto the freeway when you are traveling close to the same speed.

Don't ever drive tired....but that is another story!

contrary to what you might think, Highway driving is much easier. There are no stop lights that you have to look out for, less to think about when you are a new driver, just put your foot on the pedal and go. Once you have merged onto the highway there is nothing more to worry about.

first off, driving on a highway/freeway snt really that hard. second though, good for you. If you dont feel safe doing it, then dont. thats prob the best rule for driving.

and i honestly have always driven on the highway since ive had my liscence. I am a car nut though, so im sure that quelled most of my fears.

I live in a rural area, and the only way to get to the city is by highway, so I drive it, but my girlfriend refuses to drive it, and refuses to ride with me on it (cause I speed and race)

No, most people I know avoid them unless they live in a busy city/town with a lot of traffic on the main roads.
