I've prepared a comparison of the 4 most popular ones for you.(in order of their popularity).
Ford being the first because it has been the best selling truck for 30 consecutive years.
It also is the shortest in length & that is something that you specifically requested. Click the link to see all the specs:
http://www.fordvehicles.com/trucks/f150/compare/details/?vehicles=20130|19757|20471|18126
When preparing this comparison, I used only a basic package(& 2 wheel drive) in all 4 trucks but you can change the packages however you see fit.

For starters don't listen to anyone that tells you to buy a Toy! There crap. Both GM and Ford have great 4 door trucks. What you need to know is what size of truck. 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton? Gas or Diesel? My best advise for you is this! 1/2 ton (FORD)! 3/4 ton-GAS (GM)! 3/4 ton-DIESEL (FORD)! 1ton-GAS(GM)! 1ton-DIESEL (FORD). My reasons are the the following, the 5.4L Triton is a awsome engine and the F150 is just a great *** truck. The F250 is a good truck with the Powerstroke. But GM's 2500(3/4ton) trucks are great with the 6.0L gas Vortec. Same for the 1 ton trucks, it just depends on what kind of power trian you want. Personally I'm a FORD guy but I hate the HD trucks with GAS engines, specially the V10! Stay away from them. You get more for your money with Ford, but you'll just have to do the shopping. The 1/2 trucks offer the same towing capacties but the Ford offers more payload. When it comes to the HD trucks FORD has GM beet by a long shoot. As long as it's the Diesel. Personally I wouldn't buy a HD with a Gas engine. Just a waste. Both 4 door trucks are about the same size too! The cautionary problem with GM is that their A/C systems don't last long. This is a known fact, some people try to argue it but you can ask any A/C shop. Then theres 4WD! If this is a option then in the 1/2 tons there equal! HD trucks go with FORD they use the solid axle still. which is 10 times stronger then GM's IFS! Oh and the last thing is that Fords FRAMES are twice as stong as GM's. But hey its your truck, buy what you like. Make sure you drive the crap out of each one! Good luck !!!!!!!!!!!

Small (SUV based)
Ford Explorer Sport Trac - basically an Explorer with a bed. (I was getting 18.5 mpg with this one...true mileage, city and highway)
1/2 ton: Ford F-150 (16mpg, in 4x2, but I was pretty light on the pedal)
3/4 and 1-ton: Ford F-250 and F-350 (My friend was getting 17mpg if he wasn't towing or hauling.)
They all come in a SuperCrew version which is 4-doors. Despite what everyone else might say, I think Ford makes the best trucks, GM and Dodge come in a close 2nd and 3rd.

Ford F-150. Probably not the best in gas but one of the better ones. A ton of people around here drive 150s so they must be pretty good considering this is like Red Neck area and they know their pickups

Nissan titans are good trucks. My uncles never had a problem with his. I'd get a dodge ram 2500 but that isn't great on gas and can be hella pricy.
