Urine-odor removing sprays do not deter him. He is neutered, and he goes outside approx. 5 times a day.

do you have a crate? if you don't, try crate training him. even if he's older this can be very effective. here's a great site on crate training, that not only tells you how but why crate training is effective. good luck.

Your dog is not house trained. You need to teach him where he needs to go by going with him outside and reinforcing the proper pottying behavior.

NEVER clean up with ammonia, that smells like urine and your dog will go back to that spot over and over. Use an enymatic cleaner such a Nature's Miracle, or white vinegar and water.

This is an excellent website:

If your dog was perfectly housetrained and this behavior just started, do rehousetrain him, but also take him to the vet. If he was good in the house before, it could mean he has a health problem and needs medical attention.

I'm not any expert by any means, but I would suggest confining him to a crate and only letting him out for short periods of time. The first thing you should do when you let him out of the crate is put him on a leash and walk him. You can't just let him run around the backyard. Walk him until he uses the bathroom and then bring him back inside, but do not leave him unattended. Some dogs are harder to house-train but keep working on it and *hopefully* it will happen soon. (Its kind of like a light switch, all of a sudden they will stop using the inside and want to go outside to do their business).

Perhaps he really doesn't understand house training. Even intact males can be taught to not mark in the house. I'd go back to square one and re-housetrain him.

Try Dr. Patricia McConnell's booklet: Way to Go! How to Housetrain a Dog of Any Age.

take him or her outside every two hours for a month... clean up real good where he pissed...

If he does piss inside.. use a losely rolled up news paper and swat him... with a quick swat, not a hard swat... just fast enough for the newspapaper to make noise... and say, in a firm tone, "No!".. the noise alone will put the fear of God in him.. then take him out side immediately. Be consistant... when he pisses outside, praise him and stroke him-- give him some love...

soon he will be standing by the door waiting to go piss

good luck
