I even ask myself the same thing, and yet our Embassies and Consulates continue getting far too much involved in the domestic policies of other nations.

Did you notice that our Diplomatic Missions seems to enjoy mistreating our people living abroad. I even asked the US DoS if it is our policy to insult fellow American expatriates visiting diplomatic missions or if it was just that the DoS can't control its personnel.

The USA "sticks its noses in other countries businesses" because it has interests in global politics that it wants to protect. These interests range from military to economic to ideological. In many cases in the world, the USA is the only country that can intervene in a military or humanitarian crisis. The USA came out of an exteded period of isolationism to come to "stick its nose" in WWI. This intervention brought a rapid close to the war arguably saving millions of lives. Again, the USA "stuck its nose" in Europe's business in WWII when a nice guy named Adolf Hitler had aspirations of global domination and extermination of whole races of people. As the Cold War flared up, the political culture in the USA saw Josef Stalin as a comperable figure to Hitler with his push for a global revolution. This started a long string of interventions and actions to prevent the spread of Communism. Not all (such as Vietnam) worked out too well for the USA. After the fall of communism, the USA entered into a new role as the sole-superpower in the world. The political culture in the USA then shifted into 2 distinct segments. In the 1990's a series of well-intentioned conflicts occured to try to bring peace to war-torn nations (former Yugoslavia and Somalia). There was no clear national interest in participating in these conflicts other than to save the lives of those being ethnicly cleansed. In regards to the middle east, the USA has been invloved heavily in domestic affairs at first to contain communism, but then to preserve a delicate balance of power in the region so that no single power would gain countrol over the majority of the world's oil supply. Like it or not, oil is the fuel which drives the world economy. If global distributions were to be cut off, it could create depression and havoc world-wide. The USA is determined not to let that occur. As for the insinuation that the USA benefits by being in Iraq by getting cheap oil, that is a gross falicy. The USA receives no real economic benefit from Iraqi oil and prices, which are set by an international body called OPEC, still hover near an all-time high. The terrorist attacks did change things after 9/11. Mostly by providing the USA with a new global enemy to counter and provide a justification for expanding US interests into the Middle East and Southern Asia.

Personally I feel it is wrong to interfere either politically or economically unless there is a fair exchange where both sides want us there.

In other words, if the legal government of a country asks for help we should help them but that help should give us some return, nothing for nothing. As it is we give away mountains of money while we have people starving in this country and the recipients them hate us. Why should we tolerate that? Why should they have our money or our military aid unless they are going to return it somehow, even if it is only in returned loyalty?

Remember that there is never any such thing as a free lunch. Everything has to be paid for eventually.

I think bcoz America is the most powerful country in the world they want the world to be kept in a way that suits them by eliminating or neutralizing all threats.
I think Afghanistan was good.
But Iraq is bad and politically motivated by an enormous liar George Bush

David W seems to forget that Americans kill lots of innocent civilians in Iraq now. is that fair on them.

However I do not support terrorism. I support freedom by democratic means not by force

A lot of people feel it's oil. And that has truth to it.

For the more altruistic type, we're helping to build democracies. Even if we lose a lot, it will still be a better world in the long run.

Personally, I don't think the world understands.

Offence is the best defence.....More over his own nose became dirty enough which requires to feel better by sticking on others dirt. Moreover USA does not want to fight on AIDS, Drugs , hunger as they do not get that business in this.

Many times we are asked for help and no one else will come to the rescue. Also since we fund pretty much the entire world with taxpayer $$$, we should be entitled to be involved in a lot of cases.

It would take a few hours of American and World history to answer that. Suffice to say, usually the U.S. is the only country with the stamina to stand up to dictators and oppressors of liberty.

do you not remember members of an ORGANIZATION (not country) flying 4 planes into buildings and and a field in pennsylvania? do you not remember all the proceeding terrorist attacks on american interests overseas? we have allowed terrorism against america to flourish and grow for about 30 years out of respect for other countries borders and it eventually got 2,000 innocent americans killed. because the enemey has choosen to hide within rogue states they have grown in riches and members and we have done little to stop them until Bush. the Bush Docterine is to instead of sitting back and waiting for more attacks, attack the rogue states that allow terrorist to plot against you and me in this country and bring a fight to the enemy as a means to shift the battlefield to the places where enemy concentration is high; ala the rogue states in the mid-east and southeast asia.

specifically in iraq we have had regime change as a policy since the Iraq Liberation Proclamation signed by the democrats favorite son William J Clinton in 1996; google it. we as americans, both democrat and republican have viewed iraq as a threat since the first gulf war, actually before that even. clinton threatened to invade iraq when they wouldn't allow weapons inspectors into that country circa 1997 or 1998. saddam funded terrorists, claimed the destruction of our allie Israel and the US as a overt goal just like Iran does today and allowed a safe haven for al queida; ala moussoui. knowing that terrorism had reached our shores and having the entire free world state that iraq had weapons of mass destruction (almost all of the mid east as well as europe and asia agreed with this assessment) Bush decided to invade as opposed to sit back and wait for another potential attack this time from saddam. if he had the benefit of hindsight about the lack of WMD surely this war would not have happened, however, just like when you decide on a job, or a school, or a boyfriend, etc, you don't know how those decisions will effect your life and the lives of others until you've been through the experience.

regardless, we can sit back and be complacent with our head buried in the sand or we can root out terrorist with an aggressive foreign policy. my contention is that since 9-11 and the subsequent wars the question to ask is have we been attack again in this country. surely the motivation of terrorist has not changed and they continue to propagate their hatred and wishes for death to you, me and our fellow americans, however, they are so busy with the fight abroad and the scrutiny of our intelligence and counter-intelligence agencies over their operations that they cannot bring a fight to our soil. yes, we will continue to make mistakes, hopefully few and corrected quickly, however we must deal with the world on terms as we see it today and not with the benefit of hindsight a few years later.

we have only begun this fight. to finish off the terrorist once and for all will take decades, maybe more. we must show strenght in this time and in this world as we have seen what respecting rogue countries and regimes like the taliban has gotten us.

you can listen to who you want and make up your own mind. but the people who say our intentions in iraq were anything less than noble are simple minded morons who would rather believe in the tooth fairy than listen to the facts that are easily researched. they have villified Bush for 6 years now and that's fine. however they hate for this man, just like the republicans hate for Clinton, has caused us to lose sight of fairness and truth and a sense of common good for our country.

yes we can back away from the world stage but when we do get ready for the real war that will happen in places like New York and Los Angeles. we will be in bad shape should we wilt like cowards on this world stage.
