My parakeet and cockatiel are friends. They do not seem to like being out of sight of the other; when they are they call and call until they are back together. They seem to like to sleep in separate cages. The cockatiel is a male, the parakeet a female.
Lately, though, the cockatiel sits in the parakeet's cage and vice versa; they eat each others food. They do this once or twice everyday.
Is this changing of the cages normal or just playful? Is it harmful to them?
I ask them for a "kiss" and they put their beaks on my lips. They love to watch TV on my shoulder where they sometimes groom one another.
So this is a strange question, but do they have genuine affection for one another? Do they think of me as another bird in their "flock" or just a tree with a head that is just another bird to them? Do they love one another? Do they love me or am I just the "bird" that feeds them and keeps them clean?

Everything you've mentioned is quite normal :-) . You have a bonded pair of birds and you're definitely not only the official 'tree' but you're a flock mate, too!

I would say yes, that they show actual affection. My birds freak out if I'm gone for too long and when I return they give me our usual greeting calls. If mated birds are separated they will screech until the other mate calls back and is within visual range. It's more than instinct. It's a social function and as research is showing , filled with birdy emotion, too ^.^

I think they definitely consider you a member of their little flock and I think the 'tiel and parakeet think they are the same species. Have they tried mating? That would be funny! I 3 'tiels and I want to add a parakeet and people keep saying not to but you are proof that it could work. Two of my 'tiels do this to my lips to but the male would probably take part of my lip off. If they get along, they can stay in the same cage, there's no harm and there's no harm in separating them at night either! Yes, they like each other if they groom each other and ESPECIALLY if the 'tiel puts down his head for the parakeet to scratch but that's more of a 'tiel behavior so I don't know if the Parakeet responds. Do either of them talk or whistle tunes? Parakeets are actually supposed to be more talkative than 'tiels. Now, I've heard and read that only male 'tiels talk and that's the case with mine. Do both female and male parakeets talk? I have one male 'tiel and 2 females, should I get a male parakeet to even things out? Answer if you can. Have fun with your birdies, they make surprisingly good pets, don't they? I wish more people realized this!

Tiels are much more tame/handalble. I have 2 of each, and really, the keets are more like just pretty song birds with annoying flock calls. Tiels will bond quickly and if you get a male, he may learn to whistle tunes and talk ( although my keets have learned how yo bark...) i would suggest getting one from a respectable breeder. The ones at the chain stores are rarely if ever handled and are usually not friendly. Also, if you buy from a breeder, you know the birds data of birth, and may even get to see the parents. Good luck! birds rock!

You are part of their flock. My budgie and cockatiel love eating eachothers food (even though its exactly the same food) and sitting in eachothers cages. It's normal. They are siblings.

I have also had parakeets and cockaties that were friends, and played together sd you describe.

I would caution you that keep them in seperate cages when you are not around to seperate them in case they get into territoral issues.

If the cockatiel gets upset; he could easily kill the budgie.

They are just caring for each other and they are affectionate for each other. They care for you too. They like being around you and between themselves. It is like a web them two like each other and both likes u! they really love u and they love each other. They like to play with each other and eat each other's food. Maybe they decided to switch. Or allowed each other. If they do not fight, you are perfectly fine with them. How cute of them to love each other sooo much!

How cute...They might love each other... I'm sure they love you to if they are able to be around you. If they had a problem with you they would act weird. They probably think of you as family...

they most likely think of you as a member of their flock(and they probably love you also), and the cage trading is not a problem usually
