Reward them when they come. In the beginning you need to have a treat in your hand each time you call them. After they come to you, give them the treat and then pet them with approval in your voice. Later, just use the petting.

Use a long line about 15 foot long. Let dog wonder to the end, give command to come, coax them a little and if you are still ignored pull the dog to your repeating the come command and her name.

If 15 feet is too long to start with just only let 'em out a few feet, then call "(pets name) come".

When he has reached you ALWAYS ALWAYS praise as if he just saved the world, he's the best of the best, he done good. You have to have patience and not blow your cool or you will have stopped any positive results. This will take lots of repetitions, some dogs learn things faster than others. They just need to know what you expect of them.

Have some tiny scooby snacks ready..

Start with a short distanc... say a couple feet...

call them until they come

when they do... slide the scooby snack to them... praise them ... (good doggie- you are so smart... scratch them... ) do this for about 7 days a few times a day...

then move back further for 7 days,

then move accross the room... then final take them out side and try moving accross the whole yard...

Dont scold them if they dont get it right away... be like elmer fudd... be verwy patient...

You will be successful...

Go to your library and check out a book on your specific breed of dog... you will be supprised at what you learn..

I got a little puppy for Christmas, he is part pit-bull and part lab... It took me 4 week to house train him... he knows what "go to bed means" that took about a week.. and he is so smart I am reading books to come up with things to teach him... he is about 11 weeks old...

Good luck.

Make yourself more interesting to them. Move away from them when they are coming towards you. This activates their natural instinct to chase. Offer them a tasty treat when they get to you. Or give them lots of pets when they get to you, make it a joyful occasion.

The Cardinal Sin of Dog Training is:
Calling your dog to you, then punishing him.

If you have called your dog, when you finally get your dog, if you've scolded, or worse yet, punished him, all he's learned is that coming to you means punishment. He won't come next time.

Dogs are not capable of understanding they are being punished for running away, they just know when they get to you, bad things happened to the dog.

My dog is a runner and I had difficulty getting her to come to me if it wasn't in her plans! what I have found is that if I turn away from her and start running or even walking in the other direction she ALWAYS follows me. Its part of their natural instincts to chase so use it to your advantage and have her /him chase you! When the dog gets to you, give it lots and lots of praise for coming. Pretty soon it starts to think it was their idea! this has worked wonders for us!!!

There are some very good books at your local library on dog obedience training. I had the stubbornest dog in the world but after I trained her she learned that I am the only Queen in this castle.

this is going to sound really crazy but i swear it works. i have a yorkie that does the same thing. he ran out the door one afternoon because he saw a dog across the street and started to cross it as a car was coming, since he wouldnt come to me i was so scared and frustrated i threw my keys and hit him in the rear end. he froze in his tracks. the keys hurt alot less than the car would have! ever since then he has never run away again! i guess you have to have good aim and something in hand to throw.
