Why are Christians concerned with global warming? If you're gonna go to heaven anyway, why worry about what's happening on earth?

It would be a shame for an intelligent species (we're the only one we know about) to go extinct before it gets a chance to explore and colonize the galaxy. Such an opportunity appears to be fantastically improbable, yet because of our short term sights and because we favor magical thinking over rational thinking, we put our very existence at risk.
Intelligence and conscience have not yet proven to be evolutionary advantages, but they are our best chances - if they can fight successfully the dark force of religious thought.
Why bother, in a few words? We plant the seed of a tree so that others will later enjoy its shade.
> Why are atheists concerned with global warming? If people don't live forever, if we die as if we were never alive, what does it matter if the human race goes on?

"Once you die, it's like you were never alive."
Says who? Everything I say and do affects the world. Every person I touch is changed in some way. It's up to me to decide how I want to change it while I still have time to do so.
Honestly, I've heard a similar line of reasoning about Christians. If you believe that Jesus will return and destroy the world at some point in the near future, what's the point in trying to protect it?
Atheists realize that we are probably only going to get this one chance to live. We have a lot more incentive to do it right.

Global warming is the result of people consciously, as well as unconsciously, polluting our planet. It is very real and all too present. Hellfire, the so-called end of times, etc. are human concepts, created and believed by certain (but certainly not all, by a long shot!) people, often based on bad math, murky "prophesies" and other "mumbo jumbo". The "end of the world" on December 21, 2012 is one such example. (It's December 23, 2012, today, by the way!). Global warming is going to get humanity a lot faster and much more thoroughly than any kind of fictional premise.

Oh ! I see! If a person thinks they are nothing but worm food after they're done living, then they cant have compassion for the generations of worm food to come?
Why are you concerned about what concerns an atheist? There are many wonderful , compassionate people on this planet that don't believe in God ,heaven or any that stuff. As there are plenty of people that use God as an excuse to preform all manner of atrocities on others

Good question!
Buddhists believe in reincarnation. And it is really not a far-fetch idea. Our bodies are formed with living molecules, and our consciousness assumed to reside in the brain which is composed of many chemical compounds. When our lives end, the bodies and the abstract consciousness will disperse and likely will recombine into other beings. Making sure the environment is good to survive in does benefit our future selves for the short run.
Seeing the harmful affects of pollutions does make us be concerned with global warming whether you are atheists or not.

Well I don't think it's just atheists who are concerned with global warming. But my answer is why not be concerned? It's not too late to stop the effects of global warming. Why should we continue to trash this beautiful planet just because WE are going to die? There are going to be people in the future, why not make this a better place for them?

Are you so self centered that you only care about your future, without regard to anyone else?
I want my 2 year old daughter to have a good life. I want the other 2 year old kids that I am unrelated to but have come to know via play dates to have a good life. I want the human race to continue to thrive and gain knowledge, long beyond the time that I can personally benefit from it. Don't you?

That's a ridiculous question. Just because atheists don't believe in an afterlife for themselves, doesn't mean they don't care about the future generations, and their children, and their children's children. One has nothing to do with the other. That would be like an atheist asking you why you care about global warming, because you're going to be "in Heaven" and it won't affect you, anyway.

Well, when you die don't you think you are going to heaven so why would you care about the lowly earth?
Atheists believe that this is the only existence humankind has and they would like to leave the earth in as good shape as possible for future generations.
