For one thing, we need to talk more about victory than we do about defeat. This crap about "one last try" is exactly that; crap. Going all Yoda here, there is no try. There is only do or do not. There is no try.
This country should never agree to commit troops, and not be able to at least sustain support for those troops and their mission in the Congress as well as the Oval Office. Congress can't say that the President took us to war recklessly, when so many of them voted in favor of that same war. If we go to war, we need to have it in our head that we must achieve our goals. There is no such thing as "peace with honor". That's called defeat where I come from.
This conflict, and any other conflict we engage in from now on will be fought as much in the theater of public perception as it will on the battlefield. We can't have our Congress handing the enemy talking points, or have our press giving terrorists face time without clearing it through our intelligence people. Too bad if they don't want us to question their patriotism, because it looks questionable!
And we can't make unreasonable demands of our troops like tell them they can't shoot back at people in Mosques who have already desecrated that Mosque by killing from within.
It isn't rocket science.

As a British man, who's Prime Minister has led us into this debacle in order to gratify Mr. Bush, I would point out that no-one - ever, has "won" a war of any similar circumstance.
All the jingoistic rubbish that I've read from your earlier answers really worries me. Is that truly what Americans think - that by (effectivley) bringing out a bigger stick they will defeat the little lad in the playground.
Can't those people see that there are divided people fighting one another in Iraq, but that ALL of them are fighting us?
Doesn't that convey some sort of message, like "this is our playground, and you come from a different school so go away and let us sort our own stuff out, and, until you're gone we will all gang up on you"?
You, and we by bad governance, are fighting a "peace keeping operation" (how do you "fight" to keep "peace", it's like f-----g for virginity).
"Our" definition of "peace" means a stable, and extremely western, democracy. It is not going to happen.
It seems that no-one has even read the lessons of history, be it Vietnam or Northern Ireland, or any one of dozens of idealogically based arguments.
Outside involvement will not resolve the Iraq situation. We are kidding ourselves if we believe it will.
It may be almost a blasphemy to say it, but the Iraqi people were probably better off under Saddam. At least they had relative peace, and, if they took care not to offend the powers that were, could live relatively "normal" lives.
Now, there are hundreds of "civilians" dying every day.
There are hundreds of very brave young American and British soldiers dying also.
This will continue for so long as we foriegners are there.
It is almost certain that there will be a lot of blood shed after we leave, and a long time before any even handed government is established. But it will not happen while we are there.
Bush and Blair want to see a stable "government"in place before we leave. In which case they had better be ready to be there for years and years and years.
So - in brief (and I bet you never thought I'd get to being brief), we don't win the war, because it cannot, in our terms, be won.
30 minutes later, and I look at the thumbs. No wonder there is no peace in the world. No wonder so many good young people are dying away from their home.

Stop worrying about such things as which head gear that the prisoners at Abu Graheb are made to wear. Go strong, hit hard, don't target civilians on purpose but do not avoid collateral damage to the point that it makes us lose the war.

We won the war in less than 3 weeks. Don't you mean how do we win the Peace? At this point, the Government of Iraq isn't at war with us. The people of Iraq mostly want us gone so they can get on with their civil war.

Impose a curfew and put up roadblocks. Door to door.
Ask the Iraqi people, "What do you want? Peace and prosperity with unlimited opportunity or another dictatorship?" Then make it easy for tipsters to talk without reprisals.
Be brutal and unapologetic when going into Sadr City..
Keep the press in their hotel.

we won the war in a few days.
We are now fighting a insurgency led by foreign terrorist fighters.
Either way, we need to let the military do its job and stop handcuffing them like Vietnam with stupid Rules of Engagement.
The military needs to be able to annihilate anyone who gets in the way.

Good question after hearing Bush's description of Shea and Sunni tonight. It sounds like the only guy that could keep the peace between those nuts is a guy like Saddam.
