For the past few weeks I have been experiencing awful dreams almost every night. I don't eat anything weird before going to sleep, and I don't watch horror movies or shows before going to sleep either which are two good causes of nightmares. Which is why I cannot explain why this is happening to me almost every night because I do none of the above. The dreams are horrid which is why I will not describe them. It has gotten to the point where I cannot wake myself from the dreams, and when I do, I am deathly afraid of going back to sleep. What is wrong with me, why am I so afraid? Also, is there anyway I can make the dreams stop or at least have pleasant dreams instead of horror ones?

Try to clear your mind and relax before falling asleep. Change your sleep setting, the smell of the room or the lighting. This will help to change the mood of your dreams.

Hmm, the usual answer to all of this is that something is bothering you, yet you don't know it quite yet. Freud, one of the few things he was right in, said that the subconscious is repressed by your conscious. Your conscious is kept in check with its desires by the rules of society and the social expectation of the world. In your dreams, your subconscious, which is your deepest desires or wants, shows you something it wants, which is the something you really want.

Now, I'm no expert on this, but to me this makes some sense. Maybe your subconscious has noticed something in your life which is bothering you, yet you don't find the time to really sit down and think about it.
It could be a current event, like someone close to you suffering or something like that, or it could be something in the past of which you have been reminded lately, yet you can't fully recall what happened.

I find that the best way for me to have better sleep is to imagine whatever little fantasy or dreamworld I want to when I am in bed, falling asleep. I usually don't have any dreams that I can remember after this. It's called "escapism", if you want to look it up.
But with your details in the question I think you should try and figure out what is bothering you. It sounds a bit deeper and more meaningful than a slight worry or problem.
Good luck.

(P.S - I don't suggest using sleeping pills unless it's absolutely neccessary. Addictive, but I'm sure you know that anyway.)

Are you having a recurrent dream or just a string of nightmares? Both has happened to me. Here are a couple of suggestions: 1) change the direction that you are sleeping in, like sleep with your head where your feet normally are. Somtimes just changing positions help. 2) change or wash your sheets. You'd be amazed what sleeping on fresh sheets can do. 3) Meditate or journal before you go to sleep. This will help you clear your head so that you can sleep instead of dealing with tons of issues in your dreams. 4) And if you're spiritual try praying out loud before bed and during the night if you are frightened. I hope this helps.

There are many dream books out there and i have been reseaching them for a while. Each dream you have is meaning some thing in your life is going on. Like if you are being chased in a dream you are runnying from some thing in your real life. You can go to a book store and pick up a book they are only like ten bucks. Just keep a note book next to your bed and every dream you rember write down keep looking up every thing you rember and back track everything and put it all together with the anwser in the dream book and you can learn how to fix it in real life and it will are start to go away!!!!!!!! I promise

At one time all I had to do was drink milk before I went to bed that made me have nightmares. I stopped doing that.
You could be worrying about something? Maybe you don't think it is that bad...but it could be deep seeded. Try to listen to calming music while you go to sleep. I know they make special CDs for that. And yes....try some new scents in your bedroom. I think lavender is suppose to be good for relaxation. But get something that is lightly scented...and soothing to your nose...nothing strong or overpowering.
I hope you sleep well tonight.
