Why even tell them that you are a deserter ???? If you just moved there, it could be for all kinds of different reasons.....so it's nobody's business.

Deserting the US military is NOT a valid reason accepted for refugee status in Canada. Most deserters try to claim refugee status because they believe they would have to fight an 'illegal' war in Iraq but Canadian immigration courts have refused to rule on the legality of the Iraq war, which basically leaves deserters with no case. What it comes down to, is that US military deserters are wanted criminals for at least breach of contract, and we will ship them back.

Technically: no.

But, in practice, I think so. There's a house a few blocks from me with a sign in the window about its welcoming US deserters, and I've met at least two current deserters living here without difficulty...

They never accepted deserters, only draft-dodgers. At least officially, because desertion was also illegal in Canada but draft-dodging wasn't (except when there was a draft, WWI and WWII I think).

I know if you're from the U.S., they don't. They're afraid they'll have to house, feed and foster too many. Plus, there could be trade issues if they do. However, it hasn't stopped many people from deserting and going there.

Military objectors can come here but they have to face immigration hearings like anyone else.
