According to the bible, or christian beliefs, is it a sin to meditate? Im a christian, but I also meditate, and a christian friend of mine told me this was a sin.

I'd never heard this before, is it true? if so, why?? Its just relaxing..

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, every time I ask a question in this section I get a bunch of people answering just to tell me christianity is fake. So before you bother, thanks but no thanks.

By meditation, I mean like with the cds with a woman talking and saying "feel yourself becoming lighter and lighter, soon you find yourself floating" blah blah blah..the stuff that "brings you in, and takes you back out again" (i heard it referred to like this once, thats the best way I can describe it. That and candles and what not. My friend said it was new age and a sin. But, I dont see why.

Meditation is an emptying of the mind and has no place in Christianity. We are told to meditate on the Scripture but it doesn't apply to your question.

If you're not sure, then you should pray, ask God to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation cocerning what you are doing. Then right after you pray, spend some quiet time and listen. You will know in your heart if it is OK. Also, I know that Paul wrote that nothing is a sin in itself, but if a person thinks it is a sin, then for him it is. If you don't have a check in your Spirit then I would say to keep doing it, and maybe use the time to meditate (focus) on God

I do not see anything wrong with meditation. It is an easy way to relieve yourself of the day to day tensions that come about. GOD will hear your prayers. Ask HIM to allow you to do so in a manner that is pleasing to HIM. Have a great evening.

PS... The next time someone tells you that something is a sin, have them quote Book, Chapter, and Verse as to why they consider it to be a sin.

No meditation is not a sin.
The easiest way I can explain this is prayer is when we talk to God, and meditation is when we listen.
As in meditate on scripture.

No it's not a sin at all to meditate. In fact we should meditate in prayer and in the Word of God. To meditate means to empty ones mind of all thoughts and to allow God to fill up that empty space. If you are a Christian, just allow God's Word in. Instead of using a mantra I use the Name of Jesus. I don't use yoga just the excersise of emptying my mind to be free to concentrate on Him. It's very relaxing, refreshing and renewing to pray and meditate this way to God.

There are many forms of meditation. Christian meditation based on the life of Christ or His teachings are valuable means to spiritual growth. Many of the great saints of the Church practiced Contemplative Prayer, which is a form of meditation. However, Transcendental Meditation, aimed at complete emptying of the mind and surrendering it to spiritual forces, as practiced in many of the Eastern Religions, is a dangerous practice, opening oneself to the influence of evil.

It is new age. If you want to meditate on something really useful, open the bible and read and meditate on His word. Don't do this candle/mind imagining stuff anymore, it has nothing to do with the one true God.

Bible encourages people to meditate on spiritual things like God & what He has done for us and to meditate also on what we read in the scriptures. Meditation is a sin when it involves emptying your mind completely (i.e. yoga) because it makes way for the Devil to control you.

Cool tat.

I read your additional details. I have a cd like that. I was having serious panic attacks, especially at night. My dr recommended it and he is a devout christian. I'm an atheist. I don't think it would be wrong. If you believe in god and know you aren't doing anything with evil intentions, then I would not listen to my friend. Do what makes you feel good.
