I recently took the ASVAB and I got my scores today. I was only able to look at it and keep moving cause there was a line. I scored a 50 The recruiter didn't day wether or not it was good or bad. I tried to read her face but it was expressionless. I have no clue what a 50 means and what jobs I can get. I heard the highest score possible was 99 and it seems like a 50 would be bad but some people are telling me its good and others say it's not. Help anyone?

ASVAB is the Armed Services VOCATIONAL APTITUTE Battery. Its a bogus way of determining how well you can learn certain skills and vocations. The score is a percentile, NOT a percent. In other words, if 49 percent of the people taking the test got TWO answers or less correct, (out of 150), and you got got three, you score 50 percentile. 49 percent of the people taking the test did better than you. YOU ARE AVERAGE, literally. Now, that is NOT BAD. It just isn't GREAT. You can get a study guide at the library and take it again in the future. The recruiter can tell you when. When I first took it, the test was "TOP SECRET" and you could not get any information till you got the results. They also had five score areas and not just a general score. I read recently that for some jobs they will take ASVAB scores as low as 23 percentile. I am assuming that these people can prove themselves in other ways with a score that low. At any rate, don't sweat it. Its just a number.

The 50 doesn't necessarily qualify you for MOS's. It qualifies you for entry, and bonuses. The most important part of your ASVAB scores is your line scores. Some jobs require a higher GT score, or ST, or MM, etc. If you've taken the test already and you don't need a waiver to join, the Army recruiter can actually let you look through all the jobs and bonuses available from the office.

The score you recieved is your percentile. That means you scored on average better than 50 percent of the people taking the asvab. Your percentile doesn't really matter when you are selecting your MOS. Your line scores are what determine what job you are suitable for. Most MOS's look at your GT score. If you can try and see what your GT score, thats a better judge of how well you did.

My son scored 95 on the ASVAB.He is studying nuclear electronics. When he got his score back before he enlisted, his recruiter had a list of the jobs he qualified for(which was just about anything he wanted to do) and my son had his choice.Your recruiter(whatever branch you are considering)should be able to do the same for you. Then you can make an informed, intelligent decision. Thanks for considering serving us,your countrymen.

MsLady. Do not feel troubled. 50 is quite good. But you didn't mention which branch of the military you are trying to join.

A 50 in the ASVAB Test is great for all branches. If you are trying to join the Navy, USCG or Air Force, you will be given an appointment to go for the Physical Exam pretty soon.

Wish you the best of luck in the military.

It's not bad, but you can request to take it again and brush up on your math or mechanics to get a better score if you want.
