A lot of water IS a sure fire way of preventing hangover, but it's hard if say you've had a night of quaffing Guinness. Drinking more liquid is the last thing you feel like doing when you get home.
My good friend from Russia actually has meat before he goes to bed. He wakes up fresh as a daisy everytime we go out. I just can't understand it sometimes, but sure enough I had some pork chops with him after a night out, & i must say I felt considerably better than usual in the morning.
Another possible way of avoiding hangover is to follow the old wives tales about alcohol. They do hold a lot of truth. Dark drinks will make you have a worse hangover than light coloured drinks. Red wine espeacially is notourious for bad bad hangovers. I had one glass one night & nearly died the next morning. Guinness, being the Irishman I am, is my drink of choice. Despite being dark, I drink it slower so I actually make my drink last longer, & thus am at the bar less than my JackDaniels & Redbull drinking pals. Thus, I am still quite drunk, Guinness is strong like that, but as I only drink one type of drink; ie. not wine, then vodka, then Armaretto etc. If you stick to one drink, you'll avoid the hangovers.
Never mix grape and the grain. That's a big old wives tale. If you have wine, then whiskey, surefire sign of a hangover next morning.
All this was about what to do the night before, what about if you wake up with the hangover already? There's always hair of the dog. Have something like a bloody mary. Not a good idea really in theory as yo'll feel quite sick & actually be delaying an inevitable hangover by just getting drunk again....
My advice may seem a little crass, but my personal hangover cure is Bacon sarnie, Lucozade &.... sex (or failing that, masturbation) It does work, trust me...

Since you've already been drinking, dehydration is the biggest worry. Water is huge. Try eating something too, especially something with a lot of protien, Vitamin C or B12. Kinda of depends on what you've been drinking though. Clear drinks like gin and vodka have less cogeners, or impurities, in them which are suspected to lead to hangovers. Whiskey, beer and anything with sugar in it is killer, so try drinking more water if those are your drink of fancy. Mixed drinks and wine are the worst according to literature I've read, but everyone doesn't necessarily follow that rule. The speed at which you drink has an impact as well.

Personally, I prefer to pass out on the bathroom floor... something to say about the cold tile on my face - Works like a charm. That remedy isn't for everyone though. That and there is some truth to the old "hair of the dog that bit you" routine. Can't get hung over if you never sober up, right?

Yup. The reason you get a hangover is your body is seriously dehydrated. And no, the ice in your drink doesn't count as water. For every full drink you drink, you should try to at least drink half a glass of water.

I'll get to a point in the evening where i will just drink water from then on. I make sure I eat as well. You also need to make sure you get enough sleep as this is another reason for a hang over. A good brunch helps too as well as lucozade or fresh orange juice.

Did you want a prevention, or a cure? One is before, one is after.

Prevention: don't drink to excess.
Cure: only time will make a difference.

Any other assertion (and there is a rainbow of them) is anecdote not supported by science.

i always find that if i drink half a pint of milk, eat a banana, and take some anti-inflammatorys before i go bed it works a treat! apparently the milk will line your stomach, the banana is rich in potassium which will settle your stomach and the anti-inflams will stop the headache (caused by dehydration)
