I already called the emergency vet, he said bread and mineral oil. Anyone else had this problem and/or have any advice? I am a nervous wreck, how long do I have to wait? Will he pass it through a bowel movement or vomit? He is a German Shepard just over a year......

Actually, this is pretty common advice for this situation. The only two things that can remove the needle are surgery and endoscopy, so unless your are ready to do either of these things today, there is no point in rushing to the vet. The needle is likely not to cause any problems while passing. The bread and mineral oil are for coating the needle and hepling it pass more easily.
You want to watch for vomiting(with or without blood), not eating, painful belly(arched back, restlessness, panting heavily, agititation are common signs of a dog in pain).
Of course you have the option of scoping or surgery, but that will be alot of money spent that you may not need to spend. If you start to see any signs of problems, you will want to go the vet asap, then at that point you will need to consider surgery.
This does happen alot, and alot of times the dog has no problems, especially the big guys like shepherds. Just keep a very close eye.

Someone above mentioned vomiting. This is a great option when swollowing toxins, but NOT needles. There is more chance of problems with forcing a needle to go the wrong way up the GI tract than letting it go naturally through the intestines.
Do not make him vomit.

And one last thing...check his stools every time he goes. Once you find the needle, you will be able to relax, but do not hesitate to go the vet any time you are concerned.

Firstly u need to stay calm to care for ur dog. The dog will sense ur fear and nervousness.
Now,Depending on how sharp the needle is it may scratch the Asophigis but may be able to pass from the dogs bowels.
I would just monitor the dogs movement. if there is much concern or lack of experince in caring for animals take the dog to a vet where it will get the best care. There are no another answer other than be patient.

he will probably vomit the vet is probably right don't listen to these freak outs if something goes wrong like coughing up blood call him back and say he needs to remove it now and don't take no for an answer vets are trained in emergency situations but you should still call another vet to double check if this are ok sometimes people dont hear the real situation but dont panic it will cause your dog to hype up and that may not be good

I would get to the vet. Maybe wait till the morning and go to your regular vet (if you have one). In my city we have a large emergency vet clinic thats open only in the evenings and on holidays-when regular vets are closed. Bad thing-they are OUTRAGEOUS in cost. Around 3 times as much as a regular vet costs for everything. They even demand payment up-front. The place should be ashamed for what they charge people who are having an emergency with a pet. I have no idea if the emergency vet in your area is like that. Anyways thats a whole other story. Im certain your dog will be ok, just get him to your vet to get him checked out.
BTW, how did this happen? Are you certain he swallowed it? How do you know he swallowed this?

Stick with the bread, it might catch on to the needle and pull it down. I would be worried however about the needle tearing something inside the dog. Rush the dog to an emergency vet right now don't wait any longer or there could be some really bad consequences to dog......Lots of Luck

Get the dog to the emergency vets now. You have no idea how or where the needle could be. It's very possible the needle could puncture the stomach or intestine. They should be able to xray the dog to at least see where the needle is and if it's possible to do any damage.

Oh wow!! I can only imagine how scared you are. I can't believe the vet didn't want to do an x-ray. I would do what the vet suggested and watch for any adverse signs like bloody stool, listlessness, etc. If he exhibits any of that behavior, I'd get him in ASAP. I would even call a second emergency vet for a second opinion. I hope he passes it safely!!!!!!!

This is an EMERGENCY. Take your dog to an emergency vet RIGHT NOW. If you loved your dog, you'd be halfway to the vet right now walking barefoot in the snow with your dog who's life is at risk over your shoulder. GO!

I suggest bringing him to the vet ASAP. It could potentially pass, but there's a chance it could poke holes somewhere and cause lots of damage. A vet could probably use an endoscope to get it out of the stomach.

You need to get your dog to the Vet. The needle will NOT pass.
