It depends on the situation really..
I know years ago when I was single I was a bit of a prowler, not a player, I am a one woman at a time kinda guy.. but I used to go out with different people all the time...
but... what used to work was.
If she was alone, a direct approach, calm, no pressure, she has no reason to be uncomfortable, and no reason to say no.
If she was with friends, I'd get in good with her friends, and then let her friends know that she "seems like a really nice girl" or say something about her hair or the way she dresses or carries herself.. that always gets a "callback".
The last one, and this is the one that's batting 1000 is.. at a club or a bar... I walk up to the woman I fancy and ask in a very bumblingly, charming hugh grant sorta way...
"Excuse me, I'm sorry I just..... I just wanna know your name"
and when she tells me what her name is... suddenly I turn all George Clooney on her...
I say "Thank you", smile and casually walk off.
Then I'd go back and wait with my friends, EVERYTIME and I mean EVERYTIME the woman would come back and either ask me MY name, or want to talk about why I wanted to know... I ask her to sit down and we talk, then we flirt.
The end..
I feel very cloak and dagger, like I'm selling ancient male secrets.
