I have a 6 month old yellow lab mix pup, great temperament and well behaved indoors. Our back yard is large and fenced and when I take him out he loves to run and play but he won't come when I call him. How do I train him to come when called? He does great on a leash, but I want to be able to let him into our fenced yard and know he'll come in when I want him to. Right now I have to chase the little booger down, and of course he thinks it is a fine game. Ignoring him or leaving him out there is a good last resort but doesn't solve the problem. Help!

Hey there. When you work on "Come!" you should try to practice in a boring place. That is, there should be no distractions around - nothing that will make him think, "Wellllll, I think I'll go check out this squeaky toy/shoe/etc instead of coming to see what you have. See ya!" You need to be more exciting than the environment to have success, so pick up all toys before you begin. Pay him with treats every time he comes to you - and practice this game all the time. Hide in the house and cal him. When he finds you, have a big party, play tug, whoop it up, have a crazy good time!
Many times, the avoidance signals that dogs use when they feel nervous make us humans feel frustrated. Have patience and I'm sure your pup will come flying to you before long. Never chase your dog - you're right, he does think it's a game and you don't want the game to look like that. Instead, call him once, and then turn and RUN. Let him chase you!
Other treats to use : ask your supermarket deli for extra-thick slices of ham, roast beef, turkey, chicken, or even (ewwww!) liverwurst. Cut these up into cubes and use as treats. I will bake salmon until it flakes and use this as dog treats. Those "goldfish" crackers are okay, and Wellness makes an extra-smelly pet jerky that most dogs seem to love. Lamb lung is good - Merrick sells it, and liver treats also seem to be very motivating for my guys.

attempt now to not use the dogs's call once you're reprimanding her. This makes the dogs associate the note (it is call) with something undesirable. instead, at the same time as the dogs is being undesirable, purely say "no" or "off" or "go away it" to get her to end doing even if she's doing. attempt to purely use her call at the same time as calling her to you, and under no circumstances punish her in any respect once she does come to you. To get your dogs to larger respond to you calling her you should play a pastime. usually this works perfect once you've somebody else there to assist. 2 human beings get a handful of nutrients or treats and sit down on opposite ends of the room. One human being calls the dogs giving her the come right here command you want to apply and at the same time as the dogs comes you manage her. Then the 2d human being does a similar element. finally you may develop the area between you till you're in distinct rooms, and then distinct parts of the homestead. Then, once the dogs has mastered this interior, take her outdoors on your lower back backyard and do a similar. at the same time as the dogs consistently comes every time you call no count number the position you're you may slowly commence fazing out the treats. purely manage her yet again she comes, and then each and each and each and each 0.33 time, and finally she will come and also you gained't ought to grant her a manage.

He is only 6 mos old. Don't go to harsh. But you need to go in front of him before you take him out and say "Good little (insert name here)! Your a good doggy!" and give it a treat. It needs to recognize its name. Maybe it does not recognize its name yet. So do that. Then, when he is near you or sitting calmly in the house next to you, call his name and if he doesn't respond go to him and say his name. Give him treats when he turns to you or comes to you. Praise him and teach him to run when his name is mentioned. Best of luck!

all of the above. put puppy on a leash and combine his name with "come" for e.g. "rover-come" and then wind in the leash like a fishing reel. when he is at your feet in a loud happy positive way reward him with goodboy!!!! and a quick pat. repeat this a few times in a row a couple of times a day. at his age his attention span wont be for long and short, frequent training is better.

put it on a long leash and when you say come pull the leash to you and gradually you wont have to pull on the leash any more and you can take him/her off the leash and try it like that but do a lot of praising and treat giving every time he/she comes for a while

Give him a treat when he comes when you call him. It won't take him long and he'll be happy to come when you call.
