I am thinking about getting a Border Collie. It would be able to have alot of excersize and live in a medium yard. I live down the road from the beach and park. Does anyone know what they act like and what you have to do to take care of one properly???

Border collies (we have one, and used to breed them) are VERY intelligent and need a LOT of interaction and amusement.

They are very good working dogs and very loyal. They will herd anything that moves. Mine will run circles around the lawn mower and the snowblower. If we put him in a kennel if we go away for a weekend he spends the weekend trying to herd the dogs in the next-door kennels.

At the same time, I have described my dog as "part Border Collie, part psychotic" and they all agree that their dogs are like that too. They can be great dogs, but they can also be nuts. Anything like flashes of light on the wall, shuffled playing cards, or counting or anything at all that suggests there might be excitement in the works sends him nuts, to the point that it drives us nuts.

They're best as working dogs. A simple daily walk won't do it - they need a lot of activity and mental stimulation.

I love our dog, but goodness - there are many times he just goes too far.

Border Collie's are very sweet and very smart. They are loyal to their master and a happy dog. They like lots of exercise, so the beach will be great for him. They have long hair, so make sure you keep him groomed. You'll enjoy him. Border Collie's are great pets.

Hi my name is Buddy. My human RSO told me I should answer this question.

First thing is I need something to do. I like herding other animals, chasing anything anybody will throw for me and running.
My coat requires some care. Plus getting my coat brushed at least twice a week is kinda like you getting a massage.

For food I like most things. My mom feeds me a mixture of dry food and some good old fashioned home cooked meat and rice.

Oh yeah I like cats. No not to eat. They seem to hold my interest. I have two cats and we play all the time.

I look out for my human and the other animals in the house although my mom wont let me be aggressive (sometimes I think I want to be) good thing I graduated from school.

Mostly I like to play ball, Frisbee, stick, sock. You name it!

Happy tails (not a typo) to you.

Lots and lots and lots and lots of exercise. Not just romping around the yard. Great working dog but not the pet for everyone. They are very smart and they get board easily. They need mental and physical exercise. They can be destructive in the wrong environment.
