How do you hunt coyote, I can't ever find them during the day, but at night I hear them all night long, unless I go outside then they're quiet. I'm really wanting to kill a pack of coyotes on my property, because they've killed my cat/dog/sheep/goat/calf and my Show Pig, that I was suppose to show in a Houston Stock Show. Anybody know how to hunt coyotes??

I don't want to get a donkey, I want to plain out kill them, because one of my dogs they killed I've had for 10 years, and she was the greatest thing I've ever owned. I'm 15 now, so she's been around since I was 5, which means she's been there for as long as I can remember. So I really really, REALLY want to killl these coyotes.

Get your parents permission first.

Some States do not allow hunting at night, check with your Department of Wildlife before hunting at night.
I hunt day light only early morning late evening on cloudy days I will hunt all day long.
They usually come in one or two at a time seldom more then that.
When you shoot one start calling again from the same spot, if nothing comes in in 30 minuets move to another location 300 to 500 yards away and start all over again.
I will usually make 5 to set up a day.
Get a rabbet in distress call either hand held or electronic.
Follow the directions on the call on how to use, some hand call come with cassette tapes to teach you and that would be good to start with.
You wont to be well camouflaged hunting blinds work real well.
I use a 223, 25-06 or 308 for hunting.
The coyotes sense of smell is top of the line.
The wiser coyote will try and circle down wind to determine what is making that Rabbit Scream.
The young and dumb coyotes will run right on in, they don’t last long.
Where as the wiser coyote understands you don’t try and take a rabbit from a Bear, Wolf or Mountain Lion or Man.
In the eyes of the super predators the coyote is just another part of the food chain or target.
You might wont to incorporate some form of moving decoy to help in the ruse.
My all time favorite decoy is 3 large turkey wing feathers tied to monofilament, suspended above grass, ground what ever you terrain is
Attach it so it moves freely in the slightest of breeze and watch it dance, about 25 to 30 yards from you.
I attach to fences between, not to the past, overhanging limbs or what ever will not obstruct free movement of the dancing feathers.
If you live where there is a good population of Eagles or Hawks take spare feathers and string.
For it’s been my experience they cant Resist the dancing feathers either.
I all so buy REAL Skunk not the man made mix.
The brand I use is Tinks I order mine online, a little bit of this goes a long long way.
with 40 years and counting hunting Coyotes

Place 3 to 4 drops on a cotton ball placed in a 35MM film canaster.
OPEN the tube and with a stick raise the cotton ball so it rides on the rim of the container, then place it 10 to 15 feet down wind of your position.
I use 2 or 3 of these in a half circle down wind of my position.
When your done hunting that area, The sent bomb is reusable.

WARNING: For the young and inexperienced audience, you don’t Drink or Put the Scent on your Body.

Are you sure your problem is coyotes and not wild dogs? Coyotes do NOT hunt in packs, whereas wild dogs DO.
Bottom line is, if your problem is as serious as you make it sound, you should have discussed this with your parents, and they should have contacted the local animal control authority, and/or the state Game & Fish Comission.
It's a little hard to believe that a situation such as this could have gotten this serious without your parents having done something about it previously.
If your problem truly is coyotes, good luck, because traps, poison, and guns combined haven't put a dent in the North American coyote population! If anything, coyotes are MORE populous today than in the past, one of the very few species that are.

We have lots of coyotes here in South Dakota where I live. Most folks hunt them by using various calls. There are wind operated calls that you blow on and there are electic calls with pre recorded sounds. Most commonly used are distress calls of animals like rabbits but there are also what is called a Locator call which sounds like another coyote.

Generally coyote hunters will find a likely area and almost any area around here is likely. It is advisable to have two people to hunt. One to call, the other to keep his/her eyes open and be ready to shoot. If no coyote responds in 15 to 20 minutes then pack up and try someplace else.

Coyotes have very keen eyesight and a sense of smell. If you are hunting with two people have the shooter be a little ways off from the caller. The shooter may have to move some in order to aim at the coyote and since the coyote's attention will be focused on he caller, he may miss the movement if you are not right together.

There is a lot to being regularly successful as a coyote hunter. The best way I know of to learn how is to partner up with an experinced hunter and then hunt as much as you can.

Coyotes certainly can and do kill a lot of domestic pets and we see calves chewed up by coyotes every year. They are just trying to survive but they are very adaptable and will take an easy meal any chance they get. You have to take safeguards to protect pets and livestock in places with healthy coyote populations.

Good luck to you, a fine dog deserves some justice.

Sorry about your losses-like you i am 15 and hunt coyotes with friends and my dad. I personally like the Primos dog callers because they work really well, and they have a couple different calls, but they can get cashy. First make sure you've got a good gun that can kill them rather easily, like a high powered rifle. If you get one to come into the call, and do shoot it, get on the coyote yips and you could possibly draw another coyote right into the call, even though you just shot.

Good luck and happy hunting

No matter what they are whether dogs or coyotes or polar bears when we had big problems with them during lambing season taking our show lambs we tried to call them and still do but just couldn't get the numbers down to what we wanted so we were able to find a dead animal (preferably something you can stake down and something large and fresh) after staking it completely fill the animal full of rat poison, cyanide, or anything else toxic.

Note this is illegal and isn't good hunting practice, when we did this several years ago we had a game warden help us and he used a type of poison that was able to drop 45 coyotes within a 150 yard radius of the dead sheep

First things first. Make sure your parents agree with what's goig on. Second, 'yotes don't normally attack and kill that many and all those types of domestic animals. Make sure of what did the damage. You may want to contact your states Dept. of Wildlife or Dept. of Natural Resources to help you confirm this. You may be dealing with a group of feral dogs which could possibly be much more dangerous to you then a timid 'yote
If at this point you still want to get them, Randy Anderson has a series of DVD's under the name of "Calling all Coyotes". They are excellent, watch and learn from them. If you don't want to buy the DVD's I suggest you get either a jack rabbit or cottontail in distress closed reed mouth call. Go on line to something like "Varmit Al's" or GOFOXPRO.com and listen to how they make their distress calls and do the same.
As far as a firearm goes remember that safety is ALWAYS first. DO NOT CUT ANY CORNERS ON THIS AREA!!!!
Any center fire rifle or 12ga shotgun will work.
Put the sun at your back, the wind in face and get above the 'yote if possible. Be extremely sneaky getting into position. Almost as if you yourself are being hunted. Call quietly and spareingly. Dying rabbits don't have a lot of air in their lungs. Make sure you stay well concealled and try to keep head and arm/hand movements to a minimum.
Calling at day break and dusk have always been my best times. I don't recomend nite hunting unless you're an experienced hunter.
And my lst peice of advice would be to try to find out how they know you're leaving the house and find a different way to get outside!
Again, I need to stress safety! Make sure someone knows where you'll be and when you'll be back. At your age you may want to find an adult to help out. Make sure of your target and your back stop. Bullets fly a LONG way.
Good luck! TRED8

Since you were going to enter the livestock in the Houston Livestock Show, I am assuming you probably live in Texas. My brother lives down there, and I think he told me that it's legal to spotlight coyotes and hogs at night, so do it that way. Get yourself a spotlight, a shotgun loaded with buckshot, and see if you can call them within range. You might want to use a red lens, but I don't know how much difference it would make. I've only spotlighted a coyote, once, but it started coming towards the light when it was shined on it.

I'm sorry about the loss of your lifestock and especially your dog. Still, killing a pack of coyotes will not bring them back. Coyotes are just animals trying to survive by taking food where they can find it. Your pets were just at the bottom of the food chain. It is unfortunate, but don't take it personally.

Talk to your parents about it. If coyotes are epidemic in your area they can be trapped or baited. You can use a distress call (chick or injured rabbit) to draw them close and shoot them, but this will also bring in other animals like Bobcats. Make sure your parents approve of what you are trying to do and be safe always. Don't shoot anything you don't intend to destroy. It is hard not to be bitter, but you are dealing with a force of nature and the best Man can ever do is to keep it at bay. Coyotes even live in San Francisco. I've seen them in Houston, TX. so it is not likely we will ever exterminate them. I'm not even sure we should try.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog, Im 36 and lost 3 labs to age last year to old age - damn near killed me. So when you go after the coyotes, (there are more than one) remember they are smarter than any dog you have ever seen. They are also extremely paranoid, have a hounds sense of smell, night vision of a cat, incredible hearing, and unless they are rabid their only wish in life is to avoid humans at all cost! I have killed a few in the 6 years I have hunted them and struggled for all but one- a rabid one. Taped calls of field mice, or bunnies in stress, kitten sounds- all work. Stop right there, before you go out and start terrorizing the kitten population in your area, all the calls i mentioned above are commercially available on cassette, just get the longest versions they have and make longer slp recordings, you need every drop of time you can get. I am not familiar with Texas wildlife regulations on coyote or any other animal, so before you go off half ****** find a warden or call the DNR, our wardens are thrilled when someone of your generation shows some intrest in the great outdoors, and you will get the rules and I'd bet a helpful tip or 2. Here in Georgia, the Coyote is still considered a menace and like the opossum, coon, beaver, and great man eatin tree snipe, it carries a price on its head. There are no laws governing the methods used in collecting the head unless obvious cruelty boundaries are crossed. I use an old smoothe Weatherby .243, i set the calls in an area that i hope i have guessed is near the center of the coyotes territory. I then find a comfortable spot as far away as possible but still within sight and shot of the call. I try and stay down wind, and I try and not move. I also will use trail cams to try and discover pack numbers. I once hunted 1 animal 4 days straight, i stayed within inches of a shot. he stayed just out of reach. After the fourth day he just didn't come back. The family that had called me to dispatch him and his pack, they never saw anither Coyote. The coyote always knows that you are there. just be stll, eventually he will either investigate the bait closely, or he'll decide you are freaking him out and he'll dissapear. Almost done- didnt mean to preach at you.
I dont know what size your dog was but coyotes generally stear clear of anything over15 0r 20 lbs. They are too smart. Be very careful while out there. Those animals seem too bold for the normal coyotes. One of my coyotes I killed in self defense. My old
lab Andy and I were walking on a road through an old Georgia Pacific Pine Tree farm when all of a sudden out of complete nothingness 2 charging, snarling, growling sets of teeth hit me solid. One had my left wrist and hand in his jaws, and the other had my inner thigh just close enough to make me wonder if i was gonna get to go home with my dick. Andy was 11 years old then and wasnt as mobile as hed been as a 100 pound juvenile retriever, and he had layed behind to sniff something other than the 2 coyotes. After he noticed the altercation that i was involved in he decided I was worth bailing out. Coyotes are not big animals, but they seemed huge while they had me on my back just trying to cover my nuts. Andy looked massive in comparison when he lifted coyote 1 off my hand and immediately broke his back with a very quick shake. I had started the slow process of removing coyote 2 from my shreaded thigh when again Andy stepped up and this time broke a neck I think. I had already used my fingers to claw the eyes out of coyote # 2 when andy stepped in, yet the animal had no quit in him. It wasnt an evil thing, just a nonstop relentless feel no pain craziness in the animal. I spent a part of each of the next 14 days getting rabies shots and fighting 2 nasty infections. Andy never even got a scratch and got my spot in the bead for a couple weeks. Watch your surroundings closely, if theres one rabib nearby there will be more. Try not to resort to poisons or poisoned meat, it works but its cruel and there are way too many repurcussions for the other animals that live nearby. Be honest on your reasons, If this is about the dog, and Pig, and your feelings then call it what it is, revenge. But if you can see the coyote for what it is, at any given time possibly the smartest animal in the woods, and deffinetly the hardest to hunt, you may regain a grudging respect for the little canines.
you can write me back for any reason necessary, and keep me posted on your hunt. good luck -B
