Recently I have noticed a grinding noise when putting the car in reverse. If there is any decently hard acceleration (having to get over a large bump in a driveway for example), the noise because noticably louder and disconcerning. Also, when shifting into drive after backing up, it appears as though the transmission is slipping and the car will lurch forward after a few seconds. Two days ago, after backing up, the car became very difficult to drive and would jerk around and be very sluggish. This cleared up, but are any of these things connected? If, or if not, what is causing them?

Additionally, I had a pervious post about starting problems which were apparently resolved by replacing the fuel pump. However, less than a month after the work was done, the problems are back. We recently had an ice storm, but it was not that cold and the car has certainly been in colder and more fierce conditions before and performed admirably. The car has almost 100,000 miles on it now.

Sounds like the transmission fluid level is low. Check the fluid level by parking on level ground, set the parking brake, start the vehicle and let the fluid circulate for a while, then shift transmission through all gear ranges while holding down the brake pedal, allowing enough time for transmission to engage in each range, then place transmission in neutral and check the fluid level. If it is low add fluid to bring level up to full mark on dipstick. Drive vehicle around for a while and see if the problems return. If the problems return take the vehicle to a transmission shop and have it checked.

Check the transmission fluid. Low fluid levels can cause all the symptoms you described.

find yourself a local cottman transmission shop, They offer a 21 point transmission evaluation.

Of course, FREE of charge.
